Thank you, Liverpool Annie, for your input. I did have the information on Louis. When I found it it turned out to be pivotal and as a result made great progress in the family tree. It is just the sort of key information I'm hoping to find about Josephine.
Last night when in news archives searching for Josephine, I accidentally came across part of an article that mentioned the woman I had believed to be her sister. I nearly fell of my chair with what I read. This may end up in another thread when I have mulled things over.
LissaM, thank you so much for your sterling efforts in helping me locate Josephine in a census and her 'missing years'. My trip to the library did not prove to be fruitful. Your hospital lists are a great reference for me and the links you sent I will continue to return to.
Somewhere and sometime and no doubt with the help of Rootschatters, that vital piece of information will turn up.
Kind regards, KiwiRose.

Hi Kiwirose, excited to hear about your possible new find on Josephine's sister!
I was trolling for Lillian last night as well and came up empty handed. There is that SC death record on Ancestry for a Lillian b. 1873 who died 1938. Have you ruled her in as your Lillian? Didn't find her in the 1930 census, however!
Will have some time on the weekend when I can focus more fully.
You are making progress!!
Best, lissa

Hello LissaM.
I did send for the SC Lillian's death certificate but was disappointed with the little information it contained. The birth year was about five years out but as I'm dealing with NZ De Curtoni's I wasn't too worried. There was insufficient detail to come to any conclusion. She remained in the category of being a strong possibility. I will start a new thread regarding the latest find on Lillian, probably later today or tomorrow.
Lillian, like her sister Josephine, also managed to avoid three census. As I had more information on Josephine I decided to pursue her instead of Lily.
Kind regards, KiwiRose.

Hey KiwiRose, I've got the bug again on this mystery!!
I found this before but didn't give it much thought or scrutiny ..... 2 McDonald sisters Martha (Mattie) and Annie moved to SF. Mattie married Frank DeCurtoni and Annie married "Metrovich" which I think was Frank's business partner ??
Probably old news to you in your research but thought I would post anyway.
Adds further to the mystery -- with much of the family so closely knit and visible but the sisters Lily and Josephine/Elizabeth just the opposite!

Hello LissaM,
Yes, all your assumptions are correct re the MacDonald sisters. Coming across this information was a lucky break for me some years ago as that is how we found out about the spelling difference between the NZ De Curtoni branch and the SF family. In NZ they were De Cartoni.
Kind regards, KiwiRose.

When you google for De Cartoni everything comes up in Italian and has largely to do with animation and cartoons! They must have know that would happen when they decided to change the name! LOL!
