Ann Hutchinson Sneinton/The Meadows
« on: Wednesday 23 January 08 23:36 GMT (UK) »

Hi,

I am struggling with Ann Hutchinson.  I believe that she was born around 1832 (this varies from census to census) She was born to William and Jane Hutchinson, and born in Sneinton.

The problem is I can't find any birth, marriage or death records for her.  However I do know for sure that she gave birth to Herbert Hutchinson in 1867 in The Meadows.

Any ideas or help much appreciated!

Thanks.

Hi,
Don't know if this will help or add to the confusion!
Looked on the Nottinghamshire baptism CD and it has an Ann born to William and Ann - father's occupation lacemaker, abode Cow Court.  Baptism 03.04.1831
Now the following children are down as being born to William and Jane:
William born 23.09.1832
Henry born 09.10.1836
Father's occupation and abode are SAME.
Looking at a list of courts, yards, alleys from Blackner's History of Nottingham 1815 Cow Court was off Carter Gate - which isn't quite Sneinton, but very near.
Hope this helps a little.
Kind regards,
Paulene.

Hi again,
Herbert is living with grandparents William and Jane on the 1871 Census - at 17 Cromford Street - Exchange district of St.Marys.
Good luck with your research.

Hi Paulene,

Well thank you once again for such a great help, and that certainly is food for thought!

So it's back to the drawing board for me.... so now who is the first Ann?! The plot deepens!!

Thanks also for the info on Herbert, he seems to have spent all his life with his grandparents, but then in the 1881Census he is suddenly with 2 Ann Hutchinson's. Gosh life was so simple till I started this family history lark!

Kind regards,

Hi,
Just before I go off to bed - I think it may be that the transcriber of the registers on the CD might have got it wrong and put mother's name as Ann, or the clerk, at time of child's baptism.
I've got a case where they put father's name as William, then put john over the  top - now everyone who looks at the record on the IGI thinks father was William and can't get any further, becaude the clerk at Dr.Williams' library copied the name the uncorrected name, William! And even though I've told them they say it can't be changed!
The marriage on the IGI definitely states that William married Jane Moore in 1830 + details about burials in the General Cemetery at Nottingham.
Wonder if Ann was William's sister. The baptism at Sneinton for William gives father's name as William and mother Ann, and so does baptism for Ann (both 1805/6) - just maiden names are different. If you can it might be an idea to check the Sneinton parish register or ask SKS to help.
So, it's possible Ann looking after Herbert in 1881 is his great aunt - and the other Ann's auntie.
Hope that makes sense and I've got it right - it's late so the mind is shutting down!
As far as the mysteries/puzzles are concerned all I can say is tell me about it!!!  I'm waiting desperately to get some solutions, too.
Kind regards,
Paulene.

Hi Paulene,

Well you have been working hard! Thank you once again.

I will try to take all that in slowly.... I too feel exhausted by it all, I have just had a day at the archive and am bewildered!!

But I will digest your words, and I do understand what you are saying! Thanks so much.

What or who are SKS?

Kind regards, and good luck with your hunt,
Copperbeech5

PS I have a photocopy of William and Jane's marriage, so am happy with that side of things.

Hi,
Know the feeling - made a long trip to Nottingham archives this morning especially to view a microfilm, only to find it had been wound on the spool the wrong way, and they could only re-do it by hand, next week!!  (Did find a marriage entry I needed though).
SKS is one of the abbreviations they use on rootschat for some kind soul.
Hope all works out well.
Kind regards,
Paulene.
