Hi.
Thanks for these references.
What I now need to know is where do I go to get more information on the people concerned? Are there any indexes that detail where the people are from? (I am interested in tracing Norfolk people.)
There are so many indexes on the WWW but few tell what information is available from the original source and where we can get access to the originals.
Perhaps it is staring me in the face?

English records of the trials etc. are at the National Archives in Kew. See the following link for information leaflets on Assize, Convicts and Transportation.

Norfolk had it's own assize court.
The courts system was generally petty sessions for every day matters, quarter sessions (held quarterly as the name suggests) for crimes that required a jury and then, lastly, the assizes - for the "major" crimes.

Hi and Thanks for the info.
Yes, I have done the records in the NRO and found them very interesting indeed but I am clutching at straws perhaps by looking at the other end to see if they mention Norfolk.
Most of the ships indexes I see online only mention the name of the person and the ship and some say where the court case was. I am interested in where they came from. Silly me!
My Mum always told me I was born awkward, so what can we expect!!!

Here's a start for you my ggg grandmother Eliizabeth Killett was tried in
Suffolk and arrived in Australia in 1801. It is believed she was born in Norwich.

I've only just found your posting and there is no sign of what the family name is that is of concern in this request.
Under the circumstances you have listed here, I think that your best move would be is to locate a marriage that took place in Australia. {i maybe able to help here if I had a name}
Then apply to a transcription agent for the paper record. These are half the price of the original certificate but contain all the information on the original.
OZ certificates can contain a lot more info the UK certificates and usually the place of birth and parents are named.
Another source of information could be his Ticket of Leave or his certificate of Freedom. Most convicts received these, but not all.

Most of the source material in Australia is held by the various State Government Archives (The Mitchell Library in Sydney also) and the indexes online are probably drawn from these sources.
If you are interested in the earliest convicts (1st 2nd Fleet) there are some very good refence books available, most of which, (with one notable exception) have references/bibliography to the primary and secondary sources used. If you would like details of the books I have found most useful let me know.
For later arrivals, civil death certificates will provide place of birth, if known by the informant.

THANKS ALL OF YOU!
I have my work cut out now looking through all the info & references.
What I want to do is trace people who left Norfolk UK and settled abroad. I am not interested in names but places of origin.
My main interest is Weasenham, a pair of villages in central Norfolk and I am trying to trace all people who went from Weasenham to Canada, Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand etc etc etc.
I will try those sites mentioned and get back to you who offered if I need further help.

Francis FINCH was baptised 14 March 1813 at St George Tombland, Norwich.
He 'nicked' some copper and was convicted at Norwich assizes 26 July 1834 and was transported to OZ in 1835.
The transportation record indicated that he was married ............ no detail as to whom.
He had a tattoo on his left arm 'Sarah FINCH' which I assume was a reference to his wife ........... although his mother was named Sarah also but I doubt that the tattoo refered to her.
Two things;
1) does anyone have access to the trial details?
2) as Francis was only 21 or so at time of trial can anyone please determine who the Sarah was that he (presumably) married?
Oh ....... and when he got his ticket of leave (freedom) he set up as a well respected Blacksmith and died in OZ in 1863.

I am going to assume you live in OZ so don't have access to the Public Records Office in Kew England.
Your options are as follows:-
1. Contact a research facility in England- they will do a search at the public records office. (Ask for an outline of their fee structure first)
2. If you know someone in England they may do it for you.
3. Put a request on the Census resource discussion board - someone may be going to Kew and be able to check for you.
I was able to get a copy of the trial and also the newspaper report on the incident by using the 1st option.
