O'Neil, O'Neal or McNeil?
« on: Friday 25 January 08 17:13 GMT (UK) »

I have an ancestor William Marshall and his wife is recorded as Mary Jane O'Neil, Mary Jane O'Neal and Mary Jane McNeil on three different records. Is this quite a common mistake? He was born 1828 in Wigtownshire son of Alexander Marshall, and married Mary O'Neil 1849 at Kirkcown. A daughter Mary Marshall married George Stewart in 1870, where the bride's mother is recorded as Mary McNeil.

Also would a diminutive of Mary be Maggie? I know this is used for Margaret but I have a reason to wish Marys could be known as Maggies too.

Thanks, Christopher.

I had a quick look and will return to study it later. Very interesting comments so far.

I have a McNeil brick wall. Marion McNeil born about 1820, Stoneykirk, father Charles McNeil. Marion married Robert McGregor in 1844 in Lanarkshire.

Have been trying to find the mother of Marion McNeil, to see if her maiden name was McPhail.  Its a long shot but am trying to think outside the box.

I have for sure an Archibald McPhail McGregor born 1853/1854 Scotland, father Robert McGregor. The only Archibald McGregor with a father Robert born 1853/1854 I have found is the son of Marion McNeil and Robert McGregor, Glasgow. I have traced this family through the census, marriage and death looking for a possible McPhail somewhere as the baptism only uses the name Archibald McGregor not Archibald McPhail McGregor.

Any suggestions on how to track down Marion McNeil ?
