I'm also interested in RC schools near Crocus Street in Belfast as my family lived there in the early 1900's.  Thanks for any help you can provide.

Crocus Street is on the Springfield Road in Belfast.  The nearest school was St Paul's in Cavendish Square - 1 street away.  It adjoined St Paul's Church, on the Falls Road.  The nearest girls school was 100 yds from St Paul's school and just oppisite St Paul's Church.

Thanks Charles W.  With that information I might be able to locate my family's student records.

Hi 7903,
It looks as though we might be interested in the same area of research.  My mother's maternal grandparents (Garvey) lived at 12 Crocus St. when the 1911 census was completed.  They were origianlly from Co. Louth (next to Meath).  For some reason my late mother lived with them for a while (around 1924) so she must have attended school there too.

It's my hope to obtain school records, which are supposed to give information about the child's parents' occupations, address, etc.  Unfortunately, I don't think that catholic school records are online just yet.  Do you know of a source?

School records will not be put on line as far as I know.  I will find out if any records are available for the two schools.  Leave it to me as I go to the Belfast Records Office often.  I shall be going on Friday Morning - let me know what years that you are interested in.  The full names of the person / persons that you want to know about.  Their D.O.B. if possible.   The records for St Paul's church are not in the records office and St Paul's Church are very good at helping out with searches.  I think that we will get results.   St Paul's was built around 1895 - It was last of the parish churches to be built on the Falls Road.

Best wishes.

Hi Christine,
My Grandfather Walter Kennedy was born at 39 Crocus Street in 1904. The family had originally been living in Navan and had moved there in 1900-01.  By the time of the 1911 census  they had moved on, but I dont know where.
My Irish family research has hit a brickwall as I really need to visit Ireland to view the church records.

Hi Charles W,

Thank you for your offer to look up the records at the two schools.

I hope this posting will not seem too long but a little explanation may be needed for things to make sense.

My great-grandparents were Michael Garvey and Bridget Sharkey Garvey.  They, along with their children were natives of Co. Louth and since I'm not sure what year they moved to Belfast, it's possible that some or all of their children may have attended school there.

The children:

1.  Mary Ann "Molly" Garvey Madden (born abt. 1873) - my grandmother
2.  James Garvey (born abt. 1882)
3.  Owen Garvey (born abt. 1884)
4.  Bridget Garvey (born abt. 1889)
5.  Michael Garvey (born abt. 1889)
6.  Other children?

Also, I think it's possible my deceased mother may have attended school in Belfast for a period of time while living with her grandparents, Michael & Bridget Garvey.

Here are the facts about her:

Annie Madden, born 13 May 1912, Ballymote, Sligo

Parents:  Patrick Joseph Madden, constable, RIC and Mary Ann "Molly" Garvey Madden

Confirmed at:  Church of the Immaculate Conception in Ballymote, Sligo as "Annie Imelda Mary Theresa Madden, age 12 years,  on 30 Apr 1924, address given:  Belfast."

For some reason, she was living in Belfast at age 11/12 yet traveled to Ballymote, Sligo for her confirmation.  Which leads me to believe that she may have attended the school in Belfast.

By at least 1927, the Madden family resided once again in Ballymote as my mother's youngest sister was confirmed in the church there and the address given in her record was Ballymote.

Anything you might come across about the family would be truly appreciated.

Regards,
Christine

Hi 7903,

It looks as though our families lived very near each other.  Even if they didn't know each other personally, they may have nodded to one another in passing on the street.  I wonder what they would have thought of descendants who "talked" about them through an electronic means?

I too have hit many brick walls in Irish research.  Coming across this web site has been wonderful though.  Everyone wants to help everyone.

Good luck to you 7903.

Regards,
Christine

All the records for St Paul's School and St Catherine's School, are in the safe keeping of the Bishop.  None, are held at the records office.  I will get the details of the Bishop's house and I will post it here.  You can then work directly with the Bishop's office ref searches.

If it is possible to do a search, let me know and I will try to do it.

Best wishes.

Hi Charles W,

Thank you for your efforts.  I think I'll try and send my request to the Bishop by regular mail rather than email - it just seems it little more formal.  I'm guessing that St. Cahterine's was the girls' school?

Best regards,
Christine
