hit a brick wall
« on: Friday 25 January 08 22:53 GMT (UK) »

My great-grandparents divorced in 1897 in Hastings, Sussex.  My great-grandfather (James Corner) petioned for the divorce from his then wife Emily (nee Crump).  I have been unable to find a death or marriage record for her.  I have looked under both her married and maiden names.  She just seems to disappear after the divorce.  According to the divorce registration she had an affair with William Allistone.  The 1901 census for Hastings shows a William Allistone living in hastings but married to another women.

Any suggestions where I could look for her would be appreciated.  I will be getting a copy of the divorce papers from the UK National Archives eventually hoping that might provide some clues.

I live in Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA so I am trying to do all my research on line.

I guess you will have to wait for the release of the 1911 census in 2012.

Hi
Can you give us further details?  Did they have children?    Can you quote earlier census records? Someone might find her in 1901 if we knew her age and birth place.  On the other hand, divorce was a real disgrace in those days - especially as she was the guilty party - so she may have gone abroad.

I think it must be.  Daisy and Cissie are living with their father in 1901 and he is shown as divorced.  Emily is easy to trace back.  She always gives Eaton Bishop as place of birth.   I cannot see her in 1901 though.

Yes that is the right family.  I have all their birth, marriage and death certificates.  It's Emily I'm stuck on.   After the 1891 census she completely disappears except for the divorce registration in 1897.

Emily was born March 11 1859 in Eaton Bishop, Madley, Herefordshire.  James and Emily married Dec 3, 1883.  They had two children Daisy Louise, dob 1886 (my granmother) she came to Canada in 1918 having married my grandfather while he was over in England serving in the Canadian Expeditionary Force  during WW1.  Daisy died in 1920.  They had a second daughter Cissie Emily born in 1887 - she died in 1927.

Good suggestion Andrea - I'll check the immigration records.  She may have gone to Australia as know some Crumps ended up in Australia.
