i have had a look for the birth of james belshaw in bedfordshire between 1863-1867
there were none.
there is however a birth of a james alfred white in luton in 1865.
which would appear to add credence to the theory that james alfred belshaw and james alfred white are one and the same.
also could not find any marriage in 1864-1871 between ann white and john belshaw or belcher in either bedfordshire or hertfordshire.
the only one i could find involving ann white and john is the one i posted in 1866.

Good evening,

I have sent a message to reactivate my contact, who is the great grand-daughter of Harriet BELSHAW b. 1868. I have checked her family tree on GenesReunited and she indicates the John/Ann marriage as 1869, but does not indicate a source. I have asked her to specify where she got her date from.

She also has the Birth Certificate of John BELSHAW, indicating 6th June 1843
(Bmd 09.1843 St. Albans 6. 445)

However, after reflection, I think your theory of the John BELCHER/Ann WHITE marriage in 3rdQ 1866 fits better. The lack of any other suitable marriage either in Herts or Beds. would add weight to this.

There is every chance that their first child, James, was born before the wedding, which is why he carries his mother's maiden name. He is almost certainly our "visitor" in the 1871 Census.

How BELCHER became BELSHAW could be an enumerator's wobbly. As you say, all the other details fit - children, occupations, wife, ages.

I feel that you have, indeed, found the right people all the way through, and that it's a very good bet that you're spot on, all things considered.

When I get a reply from my contact, which should enable us to close the debate, I'll post you the details.

Which only leaves me to thank you very very much for all your time and trouble on this one ! I appreciate all your help and experience.

Good evening Mick,

Just heard back from Harriett's great grand-daughter. She had 1869 for the marriage, but agrees that the 1866 record you found seems a better bet. She's going to send for the certificate, which probably confirm our conclusions.

Two further facts: she was able to confirm that John's father was, indeed, called William, and that Fish Street was the address, so it looks like you certainly hit the nail on the head ! Apparently what little information she has comes from the daughter of the last of the BELSHAW girls, (Emily b. 1887), who is 95 now and somewhat deaf so communication isn't very easy.

Looks like the case is pretty well concluded, barring anything contradictory turning up on the 1866 certificate, but somehow I reckon it will confirm our postulate.

Many thanks once more for your help.
