connections to James Loughlin born about 1821 in Leitrim. Came to Scotland at some stage and married Frances Jane Walkingshaw. Cant find record of marriage. Chlidren are Ellen,  Thomes, Mary, Andrew, Jane, James and Ann.

If any of the children were born in Scotland their birth certificates should give date and place of parents' marriage.

If you can't find any of the children's births in Scotland have you found them in Scottish census records?
Surname may appear as Laughlin, Lachlan, McLoughlin, etc.

Welcome to RootsChat

It looks as though James and Frances married prior to the registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths which began in Scotland on 1st January 1855. For details of records held at the General Register Office in Edinburgh, see the GRO tutorial which is on the GENUKI link ... www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/Civil.html You can obtain post-1855 civil registration copies of certificates which are also held at local registrars' offices across Scotland.

Thanks to you both for advice. Managed to get into national archives in edinburgh, but still could not find marriage record despite having tracked down childrens birth records. Date of parents marriage is given as 10th april 1851  at portobello on one and and same info but 1853 on other. Any other suggestions most welcome.
