Colliery Labourer Poisoned

Does anyone know the local paper that would cover Garforth in 1908, and have access to it?
My Greatgrandfather, Thomas Malkin, died age 55 at New Hold, Garforth from eating mussels.
The death certificate shows that the informant was ?? Haworth Deputy Coroner for Honor of Pontefract.  Inquest held 19th August 1908.
Might the newspaper have more details?

Rapsy.

Rapsy,

The Yorkshire Post (http://www.ypn.co.uk) might well have covered the inquest. In addition, there may have been a local paper in the Garforth area. There is a contact email address on the site.

You could also contact Leeds Central Library, whom I think will do a search of the bound volumes for a nominal fee, particularly since you know the exact date.

Thanks for that Jon, I'll try the Yorkshire Post site.

Hi Jon,
I e-mailed The Yorkshire Post using the address on your reply but they've just suggested that I try Leeds Central Library to check old newspapers.
I contacted their Local & Family History section yesterday and I'm awaiting a reply.
Cheers, Rapsy.

Rapsy, thanks for letting me know that. I will stop recommending them, then.

Hi Jon,

Ms Lefevre, Local Studies Manager at Leeds Central Library, has come up trumps and found the entry in The Yorkshire Evening Post of 19th August 1908.
It amounts to just two column inches but explains that Thomas Malkin bought a plate of mussels at Leeds market the previous day.
Ms Lefevre sent a photocopy - cost £2.
I wonder if the seller was ever charged with selling dodgy mussels?

Many thanks for your efforts.  Regards, Rapsy.
