How do i find out a father?

Ive ordered a birth certificate for one of my ancestors ruth farrand to find out who her father was , however when i got my birth certificate is had a line across and no name of the father. THe mother of ruth must of known the father so y didn't she put it down on the birth certificate? and how do i find out whos ruth father was?

Hello andrew, it sounds as though Ruth was born 'out of wedlock'.

What year was this? any chance of finding the family in census? Have you looked for Ruth's baptism, sometimes the father is named on the original parish record.

When were her supposed parents married?  Lots of questions to answer before a solution can be found....even if her mother knew who the father was this might explain why his name is not on the cert

bother can't get the link to work...put Birth Certificate Tutorials into google - it's a good site and explains all sorts about both birth, marriage and death certs

If the birth was after 1875, a child born to an unmarried couple could only have the father's name on the birth certificate if he went to the Register Office with the mother and they registered the birth together. Before that date the mother could name the father, although I have rarely seen this happen. She could have been reluctant to name the father for a number of reasons, for example if he was married.

The parish or Poor Law Union authorities (depending on the date) would have tried to extract money from the father for the child's upkeep if she applied to them for relief - and a young unmarried woman with a child to support might have had to do that if her own family were unwilling or unable to support her and the child. so you might try looking for poor law records for the area in question. If the child was baptised, you may find a note in the register suggesting the identity of the father. I once saw a wonderful baptism entry where the vicar added the comment 'Gotten on the body of xxxxx by her sister's husband'. I wish I had noted the reference, but I was young and dumb then, and it never occurred to me.

Andrew, I have only just joined rootsweb and I hope that you are still a member...Ruth Farrand was my Great Grandma Born 1847 in the workhouse in Doncaster..I also ordered the birth certificate and as you quite rightly said no father is named and her mother Jane Farrand marries
in 1848 to John Robinson...from then on in the various census Ruth is called Ruth Robinson...the strange thing is that when she marries John Nicholson she uses her original name of Farrand which leaves me with the impression that John was not the father as she didn't take his name on the official marriage certficate to john nicholson...I know that Jane Farrand was working as a servant in Wakefield for a Civil Engineer on the 1841 census..I also know that Ruth was baptised in the family church at
adwick le street...my mother was the one to spread the tale of the blue blood..and I assume that you spoke with my sister in law on the ancestry web site...from what I can see things have been put a little out of context..the farm that they owned...i dont think so.. it was the brick works site in womersley and the cottage that ruth farrand lived in with john nicholson in 1901 is there.i stood in the kitchen with the very nice lady that owns it called marcia wakefield and the cottage has been in their hands for a long time.I think it is more likely that they rented the cottage and that john was just a signal man...my mum came from a very poor family and ruth farrand /john nicholson would have nothing to do with my grandma ruth nicholson when she married beneath herself to a minor called john thomas edwards..I think the story was made up to make my mum (daughter of Ruth Nicholson) feel better about herself and situation...I certainly have found no evidence to prove the 'blue blood' story...hope this helps...
john was a tenant as I belive he was a railway signalman..
