Help Wanted in Finding a Birth Certificate
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 23:12 GMT (UK) »

Anyone out there that's good at Maths and narrowing down?

I am searching for the birth certificate of a Charles Harris.

1861 Census gives him living with his family in Lambeth.  He is aged 7 years and said to have been born in Bethnal Green.

1876, April, Married in Camberwell  and is said to be 21 years old.

1901 Census says he is 41 years (might be an error) living in Chelsea and birth place Bethnal Green.

1934 June:  died and said to have been 80 years old.

Any help appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi Rosie J,

There's a couple of possibles on http://freebmd.rootsweb.com ; one registered in Mar 1854, the other in Dec 1854 in the Stepney district which is near to Bethnal Green.

Of course there is always the chance that he wasn't registered.

Thank you N. Jan, I was also looking at those.  I will have to decide which one to plumb for first.

My thinking is that he probably may have been registered because I have managed to trace the correct certificates for a couple of older siblings.

Best wishes, Rosie

Hi Rosie,

As you have the names of his parents you can use them as checking points, if you order the certificate from the GRO. If they don't match then you get a £4 refund.

I have found several 1854 Births London area.  Are you sure the Charles did not have a second christian name?

On 1871 Is it your Charles living Clarence place, Newington, Lambeth with parents Samuel and Mary? If so the most likely Birth is as follows

Sept Qtr 1854 Lambeth 1d 268   Charles Harris.

I have 7 other Charles only and 13 with a second chrisian name.

Let me know if I can be of more help

Hi Pam

No, I can't be sure that he didn't have a second Christian name.  All as I can say is that in the paperwork I have none are given.

Right, what I am going to do is plumb for the one in Lambeth first.  If that is incorrect that I will go back to the two put forward by Nanny Jay.

Thanks both for your help. If I am successful in obtaining the correct cert., I will come back to this thread and let you both know.

Thanks,  Rosie.

Good Luck Rosie,

Looking forward to hearing from you after arrival of certificate.
Hope it is before I go away on 6th Feb. Away for three weeks so it may take a while to reply.

Hi Pam,

Thanks for your post.  The Lambeth certificate is due 2nd Feb.  If that isn't the correct one, then I will try the other two put forward by N Jay.  If one of the three is correct, then I will come back to this thread and let you know which one it was.  Keep your fingers crossed that one of them is the right one.

Thanks for helping me.

Rosie.

as you have at least 2 census stating PoB Bethnal Green, I doubt that plumping for the Lambeth one is right   Roll Eyes

In 1871, he still says PoB Bethnal Green ... and his parents and siblings PoBs are consistant with 1861.

Hello Newfster

Thanks for your input.  Too late now as I have sent off for the cert. At least I gave reference points in my order.

However, I appreciate all the help given to me.  Thanks everyone.   Rosie.

Hello All

Thanks for all your efforts.  I have now heard from GRO on all three references applied for and, unfortunately, the Charles I am looking for was not one of the above.  The positive side is that I did request reference points, i.e. the father's name so I was refunded £4.00 for each try.  Thanks for the tip Nan.

Best wishes,  Rosie.

On his 1876 marr cert who are the witnesses,as they often turn out to be useful family members?

And who is his father and what did he do?

Hello Carol,

Thanks for your offer of help.

The marriage took place on 19.04.1876.  Charles's age was given as 21 and Marian Hammond's as 20.

The father of Charles was Samuel and he gives his occupation as horse keeper.

The witnesses were Henry FRANCIS and Emma Laura HAMMOND (sister of the bride).

The service took place at Emmanuel Church, Camberwell.

Best wishes,  Rosie x

Well with that info it looks like this is his family in 1861.

34 Cardigan St, Lambeth.

Samuel Harris head 51 Ostler(horsekeeper!) b Wiltshire
Mary Ann wife 40 b Hackney Middx
Mary A dau 17 servant b "    "
Sarah dau 15    "         b "
Samuel (JW?) son 10 scholar b Peckham Surrey
Charles son 7 scholar b Bethnal Green

RG9/347 Folio 85 Page 15

IN 1871 he is indeed the Charles that Jacques and The Newfster found, although dad seems to be labouring now.Maybe there was a horse shortage where they lived  Grin Grin Grin

If you're after mothers maiden name maybe you'll have to get one of the other kids birth certs instead? Sometimes you have to go sidewards to go backwards.Perhaps you'll be able to find Charles's birth reg then?

This looks like it might be Samuel...

Registered June 1/4 of 1851 in Camberwell, ref 4 page 94.

Samuel Thomas William HARRIS.

Regards

Carol
