Old Steam Engine Public House Gas Lane Bristol
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 14:09 GMT (UK) »

hi I wonder whether anyone knows if there is a photograph of this public house.

I have been on the lost pubs of Bristol website and found that the pub is longer standing.

I understand from the publican information that is was closed about 1931.
My husbands ancestor  Henry Curtis was the landlord there from 1858 - 1876.

I understand the full address of the pub was Cooks Road, Gas Lane Bristol.

Does anyone have any recollection of this pub whilst it was standing.
Thank you

Hello caron,

Have you tried any antiquarian book sellers in the Bristol area who might know of a book containing an article or a picture of the pub?

No I havent looked at any book shops. Do you know of any in Bristol that might keep some old pictures of Bristol?

I understand that Gas Lane Bristol is now an industrial type estate now.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi Caron

Haven't had any luck so far with pictures, but the Old Steam Engine on Cook's Road, Gas Lane seems to have wound up in the 1920's?

I found some details in a Public Domain area called Lost Pubs of Bristol it appears to be the landlord/ladies for the pub.

1856              Edwin Porter
1585 - 1876   Henry Curtis
1879 - 1907   William Hunt
1908 - 1914   John Coles
1915 - 1917   Alfred Daniells
1919              Mabel Ann Cole
1921              John Sills Cole
1923 - 1931   Eliza Shill

Will keep searching

One book shop caught my eye when I was googling earlier. The guy who runs the business lives in Bristol and specialises in books about the Bristol area and the West Country. I'm sending you the link via a PM.

thank you both for your help.  I did find details of my ancestor Henry Curtis as landlord of the Old Steam Engine Pub from the Lost Pubs of Bristol web site, but they say they dont have a picture of it.

It would be nice if I could get a picture for my family research wouldnt it! Smiley

Absolutely Caron!

It is just some take a little more chasing than others! Wink

This link might be able to help you

http://www.bygonebristol.co.uk/index.htm

I am not sure if i have done the Hyperlink correctly but type it in google or another search engine if not.

Looked quickly at their page and they seemed to be well informed and the type that if they don't have it they will know someone who will!

I was looking for a picture of an old padstow lifeboat the other day and was fortunate enough to find a postcard on ebay of all places so you never know! Cheesy

Good Luck

Hi Su,

I'm no expert on what RootsChat policy is when the link relates to items for sale. I gather from replies received from Sarah, when I have asked if I may post a link in the past, that if it is a link to a large brewery (which has a department where people can check on ancestors who were employed by the company) or even a well known tobacconists shop which gives a page or so of the history of the company that seems to be OK. I've given two examples and named no names ... I'm sure there are many other businesses that are accepted as they are able to assist genealogists (either by giving details about the type of work in the industry or by being able to name former employees). I think the link you posted is a good one as it is related to the discussion on this thread and helps Caron in the search for more information. It might be an idea to ask Sarah for her opinion though.

Thanks a mill Christopher

Does put my mind at rest somewhat.

I did read the copyright thingy but it does not sort of explain it too clearly - but this site is that well monitored I am sure there will be some supreme commander (said with total respect Wink) that would fire a shot across the bow so to speak.

Appreciate the input

thanks for your messages. I think it would be nice to buy a book on Bristol at the time my ancestors were living in bristol namely from 1766 - 1875.

Can anyone recommend a book that has old drawings and pictures of Bristol that might be of interest.  It seems that the ancestors were christened and married in St Philip and St Jacob area of Bristol, and the addresses taken from the censuses were Avon Street, The Dings, Oxford Road, and also Brick Yard Chewstoke!

Thanks for your input.  I will keep my eye on the auction house to see if anything is advertised for sale about Bristol.

Regards

Hiya Caron

I certainly wouldn't try to recommend a book, it is not my area of expertise nor is Bristol my stomping ground.

This is really where you need to approach an expert in the field and I think the website I gave you will have just that!

They collect old photographs, postcards and books etc of Bygone Bristol so they should be able to tell what they have in relation to your query.  Indeed, even if they do not have the photo, they may have information or pictures of the areas you are looking into.

If you live within reach of Bristol, maybe the Library, University or Museum can advise also - if not within reach then would make a great trip if you are able.

Have fun whatever you do.
