Broad Eye Wesleyan Methodist Chapel Stafford
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 17:16 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone have access to the register of the above chapel. In 1823 a Mary Griffiths was baptised the daughter of Joseph and Ann (IGI extraction) I am interested if any other information is recorded also what ministers were performing Baptisms

The full entry shows that she was born 22 July at Stafford and baptized 26 July, daugther of Joseph Griffiths, Preacher of the Gospel, and Ann. Joseph performed the baptism himself, as well as several others on the same page.

The whole register is online at BMDregisters.co.uk which is pay-per-view.

There is another entry for this child on BMDregisters, in Series RG5, where her parents registered her birth at the Wesleyan Metropolitan Registry of Births. This gives extra information in the form of the mother's maiden name, which was Grimes. Both parents signed, as did three witnesses, Bernard Fry, Surgeon, and two women (midwives?) who were present at the birth, Sarah Jones and Martha Pa...?

Hi Mean_genie
Thank you for the information, I have never used BMDRegisters, looks like a useful site. I cannot yet be certain this is my Joseph. From 1814 to 1817 Joseph and Mary Ann, Marianne or Mary had 3 sons born and baptised at Oxford Street Independent Bilston. Joseph, Thomas and Apollos. In one entry, that of Apollos, it shows parents as Rev Joseph and Mary Ann also on Apollos marriage certificate his father is shown as a Minister. From the register of Oxford Street he does not appear to be a minister there. To date I have not found a definite marriage for Joseph although there is an IGI extracted marriage for Joseph Griffiths and a Mary Anne Adams 22.5.1809 at All Saints, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. It would seem that it is worth checking Series RG5 to see if the first three boys are registered.
Regards

Tony, just incase you didn't know the old Chapel was pulled down and is now part of Sainsbury's Car Park, the Broadeye Windmill is still standing.  mrswoman.

Hi mrswoman
I had found the windmill by Googling but was not aware the old chapel had been demolished
Thanks for that
