i have asked for a check on the durham census for this family , but now i think the cumberland one would help me more. the family i am looking for is John and Mary Irving they were born in Longtown Cumberland and i know one of there sons was called Mathew,any clues about this family as i am struggling......Mackim

Can you give us a few more clues? Any idea when the son was born or the occupation of his father? Dates, as far as you know them, would be really helpful.

All i know is that the son Mathew had the middle name Foster, and as far as i know he was born in Longtown Cumberland , sorry i dont know the fathers occupation....Mackim

Hi Mackim
There's a John and Mary Irving living in Elswick, Newcastle on the 1871 census, John born in Longtown 1837, Mary born in Walton 1836.
Children are
Isabella b1855 Walton
John b1859 Winlaton
William b1861 " "
James b1863 Elswick
Thomas b1865 " "
Henry b1868 " "
They are living at B of 28 Ordnance Terrace, Elswick.
John is a labourer, Isabella is a book-binder. The other children are scholars.
Does any of this ring a bell? No sign of a Matthew.

You should be able to find most of the family on the 1881 census which you can see free of charge on http://www.familysearch.org/
I think this refers to his father.....

I hope that is what you were actually looking for. He is the only Matthew Foster Irving (albeit spelled wrong) that I could find anywhere.

Could someone now look on the 1841 census for John Irving born about 1822 and his brother William born about 1820,dont have any idea what the parents names are all i know is they were born either in lon gtown cumberland or kirkandrews in cumberland .i know its not much to go on but any help would do. thanks .....Mackim
