Marriage lookup: WREN/GAME - Standon
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 19:34 GMT (UK) »

I just received a marriage certificate for Thomas Wren and Sarah Game married in Standon January 15, 1838.  Unfortunately, I cannot make out their Age, Residences, and  Fathers names and occupations as the handwriting on the certificate is practically illegible.  Is there any chance someone could look up the actual parish register for this marriage and help me figure out what it says?  Thanks so much.

Hi Carol

Marriage records in Parish Records are usually copies of the Marriage Certificate post 1837, so unless you just happen to have a very poor photocopy from the GRO others may have similar problems when looking at a microfilm copy of the register!

Why not post the certificate?  You cannot post the whole certificate because of copyright, but you could do bit by bit.  Half on one post and half on another.

Unfortunately, imaging is disabled on the LOOKUP REQUESTS boards so you would have to post on the General Herts board.  I will move your post over so that you can do this.

Maybe many eyes will help you solve this!

The GRO cert will be a transcript, done quarterly, by the local register office. So the copy held by the local Register Office, the same as the marriage cert, will be different.

But I agree, post a scan and let's have a look at it

But if all else fails Carol could try getting a copy of the local register office cert.

Not always!  I have the original PRs for a Suffolk parish and the entry for my GG Grandparents is in the same hand as the certificate from the GRO!

Are the signatures etc identical? Perhaps whoever wrote out the parish register was employed in the Register Office to prepare the quarterly return to the GRO?

Looks as though the local Register Office must have done it back to front - sent off the originals and kept a transcript! There has to be one that doesn't follow procedures

Ok, I'm going to attach a piece of the Wren/Game certificate and see who can decipher it.  I'm thinking it states Thomas Wren's father as 'Peter Wren' a labourer;
Samuel Game as 'ditto' (a labourer);
Residence: Latchford and 'ditto' for Sarah Game;
Age for Thomas - 'Full age' and Sarah 'Minor'.  How old would a girl be considered a minor?
What do you think?

As do I.  I think that your deciphering was spot on! Grin

I believe that technically the use of the term "minor" could be used for anyone who had not yet  reached the age of majority (21).  From 1753 until 1823 someone under the age of 21 could not marry without parental consent.  After 1823 consent was still required, however, a marriage was still legal if it took place without it!

The minimum age for marriage in 1838 was 14 for boys and 12 for girls.

Are you happy with David's and my agreement with your conclusions or would you like a few more opinions?

Yes, I'm in agreement.  Thanks for taking a look.  I'll be posting another one shortly which is even worse, so you'll have to take a look.  Thanks again.
