Hi bigmac
Now that Scotland has released modern indexes to births and deaths to 2006 (and marriages soon to come!) you should be able to find the GROS reference numbers on her birth from within these online indexes. You'll have to access the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk website and run a search based on her birth name and place and year or range of years. Then when you find the entry in the index you can click on the link to purchase an extract. No need to visit Edinburgh as it can all be done from online!

did you get that birth cert for your mum
Have just checked the 1881 census for her mother Fanny Rowe
found her with parents
at 76 Dempster street Greenock
George Rowe 37 England printer compositer
Annie Rowe 31 England
Charles W Rowe 14
George B Rowe 12
Alfred H ROwe 9
Fanny G Rowe 7 England
Henry E Rowe 2
I am sure its them but can't quite work out the England bit at the minute
Just checking other census's

found the following on Scotlands People
Name year of death age

Now I am getting the picture
Edward McCafferty married Fanny Rowe
they had a daughter also Fanny (your grandmother)
Kathleen McCafferty sister to Edward married James Gallacher
because Fanny's mother died James and Kathleen took over the grandparents roll
and looked after your mum and the rest of the family
so that your Nan could go to work
sorry if it all sounds confusing but thats our family for you
they didn't do things the easy way
