Gaunt family - Gaps in info *complete*
« on: Monday 28 January 08 01:46 GMT (UK) »

Hi there,

I am hoping that someone might be able to help me fill in a few gaps in my family history, specifically, in my 'Gaunt' line!

My Gt Gt Grandfather was Walter Gaunt b. abt 1833, d. abt 1875 in Pudsey, Yorkshire.  He married Hannah Craven in 1852.  Walter is listed in the 1851 census living with his brother William's family.  William born abt 1803 was quite a bit older and I had thought that he probably raised Walter.  I have been trying to find out who their Mother and Father were and have hit a brick wall.  I tried the IGI listings all afternoon yesterday and the closest I came to the name was Gant, and found nothing that matched at all. I can't find an 1841 census entry with Walter on it, although I did find one that had William, wife Rachel and their family listed.  Does anyone have any hints as to where I might look next please?

kind regards,
Jill

IGI has a Pudsey baptism for a John 1825 and a Joshua 1827 parents John Gaunt & Esther.....

you can check all the Pudsey baptisms by going to the county page, click Yorkshire then Pudsey then click on appropriate batch nos. for baptisms, enter Gaunt in the surname box on the new page ...

Hi Barbara,

I think that this is probably it!  Thanks so much.  I really struggle with IGI, I have only just got onto it, but I'm finding it very complicated!

I still can't find the entry by searching on Ancestry, but that maybe because I hadn't factored in the rounding down part of the age thing.

I have checked for Walter's brother William in the 1851 census and found that he and Rachel had:
John
James
Mary (Mally in later census)
Ester
Sarah
William
Samuel

Our family is very predictable in their naming of offspring so even that adds up!
I can't thank you enough for helping me with this entry.  I don't think outside the obvious I suspect it's because I'm too fightened of getting it wrong (it stems from first registering on Ancestry only to find that someone had mistakenly pinched my Grandad!)

Thanks again Barbara!
kind regards

Hi Jill,

I found the census entry on another site, but have looked on ancestry and it is indexed under the surname GANNS - it does look to me like Gannt on the image - hope you can find it now.

IGI does have a marriage for John Gaunt to Esther in Calverley (not too far from Pudsey) but it's 9th Jan 1820, if it's the right couple maybe William was born to a different mother, this could be a second marriage for John? Just a thought

Hi Jill,
If you go to this web site
http://www.calverley.info/
enter then use the search engine. There is tons of info re Pudsey you should find a transcription of baptisms and marriages plus there could be other relevent information.

Thanks Barbara, I checked this 1841 census listing out on Ancestry and this fits well.  I looked at the original image of the census and the name definitely reads as Gaunt, when you know what you're looking for, but I can see how it would easily be transcribe wrongly!

I have thought for a long time that William probably had a different mother and the fact that the father isn't in the 1841 census possibly indicates that he was quite a bit older than Esther. It's all very intriguing and I wouldn't have worked it out without your help. Thanks so much for finding this info for me.  As a result of your great detective work, I now have a full complement of Gt Gt Grandparents on my family tree!!

kind regards,

Hi Dave,

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this web-site again. I used it to check out my Holdsworth ancestry at one point (I notice that Holdsworth is one of your areas of research too, we should compare notes some time) but because the name  Holdsworth, in the North of England, is about as common as Smith and the traditional given names in our family are William, Charles etc, and because of the inaccuracy of the birth dates in the 1841 census I have never been able to pin down who "our Holdsworths" are from the list on the web-site!!

I had forgotten the web-site since then, but will try it with the Gaunts and Austins, some of other lines I'm puzzling out!

I have decided that when I come home to England in August, I will extend my stay by a week to visit Pudsey and Calverley church yards to see what I can discover first hand. Most of my family came from that area in the 1800s, so I'm expecting to see graves etc that might help me fill in some gaps.

thanks for your help!
