Eva Maria Jones

Eva Maria Jones first appeared as a witness at my great grandfather William Henry Phillips marriage 2/3 1871. I then found her on the 1871 census as the grandaughter of my 2x great grandfather William Phillips. She was 17 so should have been born abt. 1854. Her birth is not registered on the GRO and Southport Record Office cannot find her.

She marries William Charles Woodward 3/4/1877 in Gloucester. Her address is St Catherine Street and her father is Henry Jones, a Stonemason.

I hoped to find her on the 1861 census with her mother but no luck so far.

For her grandfather to be a Phillips, I guess that her mother was also a Phillips and the only likely candidate is William Henry's sister Ann who was born in 1832. After the 1851 census there is no trace of her so perhaps she died in childbirth.

I have hit the proverbial brick wall. Huh

Hello

Had a look for a death of Ann Phil (l) ips in Gloucester and only found one

Ann PHILLIPS 28 Nov 1847 aged 23 in Gloucester

This was on the Glos FHS burial index - not sure how comprehensive this is (and no insult intended to those whose sterling work provided it!!)

Thanks for your help.

Ann Phillips was alive on the 1851 census at 53, Alvin St with her parents & brother.

It is only a guess that she might have been the unmarried mother of Eva Maria Jones.

Looks like it is a mystery that I will never solve.

I do not live in Gloucester, but my mother's family came from there. I have family still there , sadly they are not that interested in the family history.

Eva Maria is my mystery person and I am resigned to never knowing who her mother was.

Hi Sue,

Certificate arrived today and Eva Maria Jones is the illegitimate daughter of Ann Phillips as I had hoped.

They were at 6, Alvin St, St John the Baptist in 1853 but no trace on 1861 census. I have Ann's parents William & Sarah with brother William Henry in Worcester Street.

Eva Maria is not with her father Henry Jones either so another little mystery.
