Thorp Road Gaol - Peterborough

Hello all,

I've found an ancestor who is listed in the 1851 Census as a prisoner in Thorp Road Gaol in Peterborough.

Bit of a first this for me - anyone know any information about the place or where i might find some records (or whether they even exist).

Hi

Found this bit of info about it

A new prison was built on Thorpe Road in 1840 in the style of Pentonville Prison in London. The front of this building survives today as the Sessions House restaurant. This was the Peterborough prison up until 1878, when prisoners were instead sent to Northampton or Cambridge

That'd be great.

The name i'm interested in is a John Stephen CARTER b c.1824

He got married in about 1847 so that means he was incarcerated sometime between 1847 & 1851 if that helps at all.
