I get the feeling that this going to be a sad story
That very same year, there is a death:
1898 WEIGHTMAN MAGGIE DONALDSON F 38 PERTH /PERTH 387/00 0472
In the 1901 Census, Daniel looks to have remarried a Christina. You won't find it on the Ancestry index (or not that I can easily see!) but they show on Scotlands People living in Methven Perthshire under the spelling of WIGHTMAN. A child Maggie and another child Diana also show in the household entry.
A possible second marriage for Daniel:
1899 WEIGHTMAN DANIEL DRUMMOND CHRISTINA METHVEN /PERTH 380/00 0004
Let me know how you get on......
Regards.

Maggie WEIGHTMAN's birth reg. was in 1898 in Perth ~ may account for mother's death most likely.
What I can't figure is why Maggie shows so young on the 1901 census entry. It would have to be where the smudge is on the page , but it has been transcribed/looks like x months

With the arrival of the new extended indices on SP, you can search past the on-line viewing year of 1957, however, some info such as mother's maiden name is still restricted as you are finding. There are notes on SP regarding this issue (including on the search screen) for explanation.
Likely entry for Daniel in the English census in 1881:
Ann WEIGHTMAN Head W 78 b. York, England Daniel WEIGHTMAN Son W 46 b. Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England Quarryman (Slate) William WEIGHTMAN Grand Son 13 b. Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England Scholar Daniel WEIGHTMAN Grand Son 11 b. Crosthwaite, Cumberland, England Scholar
Address: Grange Village, Borrowdale, Cumberland, England

What a co-incidence. Daniel's mother looks to have also died just after he was born. This is his 1871 entry in Keswick:
Ann Weightman 67, b. Yorkshire, England Daniel Weightman 36, b. Grange, Cumberland John Weightman 7, b. Grange, Cumberland Thomas Weightman 5, b. Grange, Cumberland William Weightman 3, b. Grange, Cumberland Daniel Weightman 1, b. Keswick, Cumberland, England
Is Daniel's mother showing as Mary on his MC to Maggie? There is this death:
Deaths Sep 1870 Weightman Mary 24 Cockermouth 10b 317
