This seems a long road. My ansectors lived "Sydenham Lawn" Sydenham Road They lived there in 1881 census and 1891 census. All houses seem to have a name not a number. Does this house still exist ? Is there a photo? or can anyone take one if it's still there ?

Hi Argentina
There are references to Sydenham estate here
http://www.cheltgaz.ukpc.net/
Sydenham estate. Termed thus in 1868, when building land on the estate was being offered for sale (Examiner, 19 Feb.). Comprises approximately the block east of Carlton Street and north of the London Road. Development appears to have been rather slow, extending into the 1900s (with more modern infill). Term still in use in 1898: ref. to 'all the Sydenham Estate roads' June 1898 MTC, i.e. Sydenham Road, Sydenham Road South, and Sydenham Villas Road. A Sydenham Cottage and Sydenham Lodge listed on east side of Hales Road in 1870 directory may perhaps predate the main development. Name presumably intended to evoke the London Sydenham, which became a fashionable suburb after the construction of the Crystal Palace in 1854; though a more local origin (e.g. from Sydenham in Upton St Leonards parish) is also possible. This could suggest a thematic link with neighbouring Cranham Road. I should be in the vicinity in the next week or so - remind me if I forget!
kind regards, Arranroots

Can you give me the census references for your family, so that I can get an idea of where to look please?
Will have a play with the 1881 when I get the chance!
A
Edit: I have found the FRANKLIN family in 1881 - that gives me a location to work on. Most of the houses are still there I think - with extra ones built in their gardens!!

I have also found on the same page another member of the family Burman Edwards and Mary A Edwards with 2 children and a servant. He is a retired estate Agent. and they live three doors down on the same road in a house called "Morecombe"

Hi Argentina
So sorry for the long delay - life gets in the way!
I went to look for the house today. Mixed news!
The roads around there are muddled - divided into Sydenham Road North, SR South and Sydenham Villas Road.
Looking at the censuses I think Sydenham Lawns should be near Glenroy - which I found in SVR. Fleetwood is next door the other side in SRS & I found that. There aren't really any older houses on the same side of the road but opposite is one of the right sort of size (?) and age. Unfortunately it is currently being done up - gutted.
And so am I!
After an hour in 27 degrees of heat I still have no photo for you!
I did find this when googling (although I don;t think the photo is of the house you want - might be worth contacting the person?)
House History Website
I will see what else I can find & report back if I find anything helpful.
Sorry!
Kind regards, Arranroots
p.s. Thanks to the lovely people who tried to help me - they are lovely around there!

p.s. I have registered on the site I linked to above (Not easy without giving your inside leg measurement!) and sent a message to someone calling themselves Sydenham Lawn.
Watch this space!
