Birmingham pub in 1881
« on: Tuesday 29 January 08 15:56 GMT (UK) »

Hi RootsChatters,

In the 1881 census Alfred STREET (b. 1841, Petworth Sussex) and his wife Ann are living at 39 Parade, Birmingham.  (RG11/2968/38/2)

Both have the occupation "Licensed Victualler".

I take it that means 39 Parade was a public house.  Does anybody know its name?

Cheers,
Stovepipe

Derek,

Thanks for giving me a better idea of the location - that helps.  But I took "39 Parade" to be the street address, not the pub name (why else would I have asked for the pub name  Huh ).  Sorry if I wasn't clear about that.

Sue,

Thanks for your alternate reading of the 1881 census.  Does it really say "Petsworth"?  I used the LDS transcription - the place in Sussex has the name Petworth.

But I'd still like to know the name of the pub, if anyone can help.

Cheers,

There's a picture of 'The Parade' in Birmingham here, but it doesn't show a pub ~ not even sure if it's the right parade:

Hello All
Derek & Tricia are correct.Parade was part of the main highway into B'ham from Smethwick Staffs. It consisted entirely of shops, businesses & obviously pubs.39 Parade is the address.
I can tell you that in 1896 it belonged to JH Forrester who sold Brittania metal wares.
Tricia...the photo you have is of the Parade..If my memory is correct I think I gave it to you...isn't your rellies false leg shop on it?
                                    Regards

Hi Jim,

Does your list give the licensee and/or the address of each pub?

Many thanks, Jim - that's a great resource.

Seems like there were two or three pubs in Parade, but none with the right street number or licensee.

My subject, Alfred Street, married a woman 15 years older than himself (according to the 1881 census).  I wonder if she was a licensee before the marriage?  When I find out her former name I might revisit your site looking for her.

Thanks again,
Stovepipe
