Families from Kincardineshire
« on: Wednesday 30 January 08 17:44 UTC (UK) »

My husband's grandmother came from Porthlethen Kincardineshire. His grandmother left her home in Scotland for London when she was 14/15 and didn't keep in touch with her sisters. Does anyone recognise any of the names?

Her grandparents John Allan and Jane Wood married 1849

Her sisters: Jemima King married David Buchan married 1892
Rachel Allan married William Napier married 1900
Sarah Allan married Alexander Edward married 1904
Christina Allan married Frederick Donaldson (emigrated to New Zealand) married 1900
Margaret Allan married John Edward married 1903
Georgina Allan married George Begg (emigrated to New Zealand) married 1908
Martha Allan married Archibald Buchan married 1916
Williamina Allan married Robert Kidd married 1920

Thank you Alesia

Hi ev,

I think she probably means Portlethen.

(edit) On IGI there is a Marriage of a John Allan & Jane Wood on 8 April 1849 in Banchory Devenick, which I think is the parish for Portlethen.  If not, it's the one next door!

Cheers
Jim

Absolutely right! The nearest place probably well known is Stonehaven. I have all the parents details it is the listed children's families I don't know much about. Except for Jemima who married earlier than the others, I have been unable to gather the names of children for them as they married on the later side.

I was able to find names for the children of Christina and Georgina from their migrant list on findmypast.com. My mother in law thinks that Wiliamina had an illigitimate child but post 1907. She had told me as much as she can but her mother never spoke much about Scotland and the only sister she really kept in touch with was Georgina in New Zealand. In fact my mother in law didn't know about Martha!

As Scotlands People only gives definate information up to 1907 unless you are sure of names and years you are up the creek without a paddle!

John Allan 1853 - 1901 Salmon fisher Christina King 1851 - 1899 fish fileter died from blood poisoning after a fish bone entered her hand. So the girls lost their parents at a young age.

Christina's own father John King also died young 1824 -1855 her mother was Sarah Nicol 1826 - 1902 they were married 24/09/1875 at Finden Porthlethen.

I just hope that someone might recognise the names and have them in their tree.

Thanks Alésia
