PLAGUE!! in 1809????? surely not?
« on: Wednesday 30 January 08 22:34 GMT (UK) »

Brain picking again----

I have been trawling through parish record transcripts for Otley/Burley-(WFHG-wonderful)-trying to find events for pauper London apprentices who were sent to the Burley cotton works- and came across a really odd entry in burials--
" 27 July 1809  John Rasterick son of Thomas and Catherine Shaw of Otley, Surgeon and Apothecary
Plague at Burley Cotton Works"

I have googled like mad, but cant find any reference to "plague" in the Wharfedale area--I suppose it isn't imposs, as cotton was being imported from India (?) or the USA..... but could it be a typo? ie "a Plaque" at etc???

Calling all local historians- was there plague at Burley in 1809, and would it be linked to cotton import? and what would it be? pnuemonic, 'flu? The registers don't indicate a higher than normal mortality, but I think I once read that plague isn't that fatal--- am i wrong?

Any thoughts would be great
