MacAra/McAra
« on: Thursday 31 January 08 02:44 UTC (UK) »

Niel MacAra & Matilda (Monteath) married in 1825 and lived in Muthill.  Their daughter Jane was born 1839. It's a possibility that the family emigrated to New Zealand.  I do know that Jane married (possibly in New Zealand) and moved to Australia.
If anyone knows anything about Niel, Matilda and/or Jane, I'd certainly appreciate a message.

Hello

Jean (Jane?) born abt 1829.

On 1841 census, they are in Muthill, address Braco Village and Neil is a surgeon. All born in county. Seems to be a household with other families. The MacAra family include:
Neil 45 yrs (1851 census head age = 60  born Fowlis W, Perthshire )
Mathilda 30 yrs (1851 census wife age = 40  born Muthill, Perthshire )
Jean 12 years
Neil 10 yrs
Matilda 8 yrs (1851 census daughter age = 17  born Muthill, Perthshire )
William 6 yrs (1851 census son age = 15  born Muthill, Perthshire )
Lilly 4 yrs
Christain 2 yrs  (1851 census daughter age = 11  born Muthill, Perthshire )

(Elizabeth 1851 census daughter age = 9  born Muthill, Perthshire )
(Robert 1851 census son age = 6  born Muthill, Perthshire )
(Catherine 1851 census daughter age = 1  born Muthill, Perthshire )
(James 1851 census son age = 1  born Muthill, Perthshire )

1851 still in Muthill, Village of Braco with the exception of Jean, Neil and Lilly. Neil's occupation is London Licenced Medical General Practioner

There is a Jean MacAra servant, house maid born Menthill, Perthshire age 22 born about 1829 at address Herbertshire in civil parish Dunipace in Sterlingshire. Head of the household is Agnes Forbes a 60 year old Annuitant.

Thanks, Linda
The other problem I have is I cannot find any birth details of Niel or Matilda on the Scottish People's website, nor IGI. If you or anyone else knows that information, I'd be delighted to add it to my tree.

Hello

Interesting they married on Christmas day in 1825. On the marriage record did it list Mathilda's father as James?

These may be of interest:

Mary Monteath born August 18, 1815 and christened in Muthill, August 27, 1815, father James Monteath & mother Janet Gray on IGI.

Christian Monteath married Robt in Dunblane, Perth on August 10, 1822.

On the 1841 Census there is a James Monteath living with Christian Robertson. Could be father.
Dunblane, Perthshire
Address = Faus Dunblane
James Monteath, 77
Andrew Robertson, 25, agricultural labourer
Christian Robertson, 50, grocer
Elizabeth Robertson, 20
Janet Robertson, 25
Mary Robertson, 45, female servant
(all born in Perthshire)

Fowlis W = Fowlis Wester

Hi apparently there were lots of marriages on Christmas day as that was the one day of the year that people "in service" had off

Funnily enough, I got on to Scotlands People yesterday & just punched in Monteath. Got the same Mary & I reckon it's Matilda - after all, sometimes they were christened one name, but often got called by another 'pet' name.  there were no parents names listed on the Marriage register.
Still not having any luck with Niel - I couldn't find a birth record for a Niel anywhere near the beginnng of 1800 -  he was about 14 years older than Matilda.
Daughter Jane (or Jean) married a Peter Rigby, but I am yet to find details of that marriage. I'm wondering if they 'eloped', as they ended up in Australia but I can't find them on our immigration lists in the  public records . The marriage was not registered in NZ (as mentioned on child's birth cert.) as I had it checked out.  What a difficult family!! Roll Eyes

Hi
The IGI has a baptism for a Niel Mccara (note spelling with a double "c") in Monzie Parish, Perthshire 10th March 1791 whose age fits.

The Mary Monteath born Muthill 1815 can't be Matilda as she would have only been 10 when married in 1825. Also, her age in 1851 (45) indicates born c1806

Hi
There is an MI for a Neil McAra a Surgeon who died 1855 age 63 and buried in the Ardoch Cemetery, Braco. No one else is mentioned on the MI.

A quick check of Scotlandspeople shows a Neil McAra died in 1855. His death certificate would be handy as 1855 certificates had more info than later years,

Yes, I suspected Niel MacAra must have died some time after the 1851 census really - not everyone lived into their 90's.
Looks like I'll have to keep searching for Matilda.  She could  have been 'in service' as she married on Christmas Day - which was the only day they had off.

Hi
Matilda is living at 13 Front St, Braco in the 1861 census age 54, She is under her maiden name Monteith.  Also in the household are 2 of her daughters, Catherine age 11 and Christian age 21.

That's what tricked me, Andy.  Silly me!  I didn't think to look for her maiden name as normally only divorced people would revert to it.  That should make it easier for me to find out when she died. Thanks.Undecided

Hello,

I have connections to McAras from Monzie and Monzievaird And Strowan in Perth. It is not a common name so I wonder if we can find a link between our families?

My ancestor Elizabeth McAra was christened 24 Apr 1785 Monzievaird And Strowan, she married a Peter McLaren and appears to have died pre-1841.
She had one sibling and her parents were Duncan McAra and Anne Morison married 4 Jul 1784 Crieff, Perth, Scotland.
Duncan McAra was christened 25 Dec 1761 Monzie, he had nine brothers and sisters. His parents were Andrew McAra and Anne Tansh married 20 Sep 1744 Monzie.

I can't be certain, but it appears that my McAra's trace back to a James McAra also of Monzie.  James was born in 1727 and married a Katherine Drysdale.  Their son Andrew married Janet Murray & their son Niel married Matilda Monteath.  At this stage I can't quite get it all to gel.
If anyone else can shed some light on it... go for it!

I was looking at possibilities for your family lochlass and I thought

ANDREW MCARA, born 30 MAR 1739 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
to JOHN MCARA and HELEN MCNEIL

was an interesting possibility.

I know it is in Edinburgh, but the McAra surname is from Perth so they probably would have been from there.
