Can anyone help? I am looking for information on Isaac Thompson, a farmer from either the Hartlepool or Stranton area. His son John Thompson (born 1849-50) married Amanda M Thompson (no relation...I hope) of Ripon, Yorks in 1875. Her father was a farmer named John Thompson(spooky). Can anyone help?

That would make this the 1851 entry:
Isaac Thompson aged 46 Railway Porter b Sunderland Hannah aged 45 Walkworth Isaac 14 Sunderland Hannah 11 Sunderland Martha 8 Gateshead Robert 4 Gateshead John 2 Gateshead.
They are, as you might guess, living in Gateshead!

Thanks for that, and that is what I originally thought. But I sent away for the marriage cert of John and Amanda Thompson and clearly states that Isaac was a farmer. It's possible that he went from railway worker to farmer but he would have done so pretty late in life.

I have spoken to a distant relative who confirms that Isaac Thompson is indeed the railway worker that you guys have unearthed (figuratively that is). Sorry to have doubted you. It seems that most people who retired kept on working as labourers of one sort or another to put the food on the table. Agricultural labourers often referred to themselves as farmers. My, they were different times. It's off to Gateshead! Thanks for your help. Scott

That's quite all right Scott, we're not always right! When they put different occupations or change them it can get quite confusing, I'm working on a family with the head as a shoemaker, who suddenly becomes a labourer in a coalmine.....
Good luck in Gateshead Barbara

I've since talked to a relative who has done some footwork and found out that Isaac's father was another Isaac Thompson born in 1771 and his mother was a Margaret Jackson born 1774 in a place called Brancepeth. She apparently is related to the American President Andrew Jackson and Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. Her mother was an Ann Caslah and her father was Jacob Jackson born in 1745. His mother was a Margaret Oston. Where are these fascinating surnames now? Isaac Thompson Senior's father may have been a Thomas Thompson but that is uncertain and the trail runs cold from that point on. Scott

Just for the sake of completeness. Is there a 1861 census for this family? Thanks Scott

I must ask you to forgive my lack of organization. Since I have undertaken this ever growing project I have not encountered the problems of research availablity that had plagued my grandfather the last time it was attempted. Just the opposite! I am surrounded by a sea of papers, half-drawn tree charts and different coloured post-its with bearly legible dates and names. I just need three more things to wrap up the loose ends for the Thompson's of Hartlepool; the 1881 Census for the Isaac and Hannah Thompson family (I doubt that either Isaac or Hannah survived to the 1891 Census) and the 1881 Census and1901 Census for the John and Amanda Thompson. Can any of you good people help? Scott
