Thanks for the advice Forfarian, and the R was a typo.

It seems as if John McDonald and Janet Rutherford are the parents then.
Is there a way to confirm this though? Even if get Mathew's birth from the parish register, can I be certain that he is my ancestor?

The entry in the Cleish Parish register reads as follows:

"Mathew McDonald natural son to John McDonald & Janet Rutherford in watergate born the the 24 Decr 1789 was baptised afterward".
