Gleish? Records error? - COMPLETED
« on: Thursday 31 January 08 15:33 GMT (UK) »

According to familysearch.org my ancestor Matthew McDonald was born in 'Gleish, Angus, Scotland'.

However, I cannot find any information at all on this village or town. In fact, I am not even sure if it exists.

Is this a place so small that I can't find out about it online?
Could it be a typo? (are there similarily written towns/villages?)
Or could the entry be a mistake? And if so, then where was he born?

I would be thankful if anybody could shed some light on this matter.

Here is the entry: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/individual_record.asp?recid=700105098541

This is only a suggestion - I could be very wide of the mark -

There is a Creigh hill near the backwater reservoir.  This reservoir was constructed in the 1960's if my memory serves me right, and quite a lot of houses & farms disappeared under the water at this time.  The road used to go through where the water is today.

Try having a look at some old maps of the area.  You might be lucky.

Here's what it looks like now -

Rowana: Thanks for the suggestion but I can't find anything on http://vision.edina.ac.uk/maps/map_lib_page.do

I have searched http://vision.edina.ac.uk/ which would most likely have a record of 'Gleish' had it ever existed, but nothing turns up, which leads me to believe that Gleish is in fact a type or an error... I still have no clue what it could be.

Hi TunjiLees  Smiley

Just in case you weren't aware, the entry on FamilySearch is a submitted one, so needs to be taken with a grain of salt...they are one person's interpretation of what the records say, and they could even be just a guess on the submitter's part, so don't hold too much store by it.

I notice your enquiry says "Andrew", but the name on the IGI record is "Matthew".  Is this correct?

Okay thanks.
And yes, I meant to say Andrew: sometimes I can get confused with all the names of ancestors I keep discovering ~_~...

Hi TunjiLees  Smiley

So you are looking for Andrew McDonald?  What is the earliest definite record you have for him - do you have a marriage record?
The FamilySearch entry you found is not your man because his name is Matthew.
Do you know about/have access to Scotland's People website?

Agh sorry I really confused myself and everyone... I typed the wrong name here in this forum (I said Andrew when I meant Matthew). (I have now modified my originam post)

I got him mixed up with Andrew Simpson for some reason (another ancestor of mine)... ( http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/individual_record.asp?recid=500199146292 )

I AM however looking for more information on Matthew McDonald ( http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/individual_record.asp?recid=700105098541 ) and his wife Marjory Lamb ( http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/individual_record.asp?recid=700105098540 )
marriage: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/igi/individual_record.asp?recid=500183252179 (marriage lists it as May Lamb)

I thought that it might have been 'Cleish' which is a parish containing the village of Cleish.  The problem is that Cleish is in the county of Kinross and not Angus.  To see its location go to: maps.google.co.uk
The IGI has this, taken from the records:    Mathew McDonald born 24 Dec 1789, Cleish, Kinross, his parents being John McDonald and Janet Rutherford.

It may be Cleish, however I don't think he is that Matthew because according to his marriage he is born in 1803:

Hi TunjiLees,
I note that the entry in the IGI is a submission from a member and states that the birth is 'About' 1803.  Entries such as these are little more than a guess.  I have found that when a submission gives the day, month and year of an event it is usually reliable.  I searched ScotlandsPeople for the birth/baptism of Matthew McDonald and found nothing.  Likewise for his marriage.

SNAP!!  Grin

TunjiLees, can you tell us what the earliest confirmed info is that you have for Matthew McDonald?  Do you have the birth of one of his children, for example, that gives his name?  We are whistling in the dark at the moment, but if you give us some cold, hard facts, we can help you better  Smiley

Cheers

Well thank you for clearing that up. I'm new to genealogical research and am not that familiarized with the particularities.

Here is the information I have on my ancestor Matthew Mcdonald:

Matthew Mcdonald (b. Abt 1803, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland)
+ (m. 29 Nov 1832, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland)
Marjory (or May) Lamb (b. Abt 1807, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland)
  =
Helen Lamb Mcdonald
  b.  8 Feb 1833
  c. 24 Feb 1833, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland
James Mcdonald
  b.  8 Aug 1834
  c. 17 Aug 1834, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland
John Mcdonald
  b. 11 Dec 1836,
  c. 18 Dec 1836, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland
David Anderson Mcdonald
  b. 11 Mar 1840
  c. 29 Mar 1840, Newtyle, Angus, Scotland

Marjory Lamb's date of birth is also listed as 'Abt', so perhaps that is off as well.

Right, I've checked on Scotland's People and the first baptism (of Helen) is right for both date and parents.  Did you get the baptism and birth details off Scotland's People, or FamilySearch?

I've snipped Helen's baptism entry from the Newtyle register page and posted it here, because it shows the native parish of Matthew McDonald - and it certainly looks like "Cleish".  A quick search of GENUKI shows that Cleish is a parish and village in Kinross:
http://www.dgnscrn.demon.co.uk/genuki/KRS/Cleish/index.html

Hope this helps  Smiley

I knew someone else had mentioned this Cleish - thanks Isles  Smiley

I also noticed that all the other baptism entries on the page that Helen's is on stated that the father and mother were married, e.g. "Fred Nerk and Mabel Bloggs his spouse", but Matthew and Marjory don't have this qualifier.  Could this be why there isn't a marriage showing up for them?  Might be worth looking on Scotlands People at the entries for the other children, to see if they are mentioned as married on later baptisms.
