thanks helen for your reply. i only know he was in clydebank in dec 1912. when my aunt was born. he was married in belfast in feb 1912. cannot find any clue to his birth in n.ireland. was hoping he maybe was born in scotland. at sometime he returned to belfast , as the rest of his family seem to be born here. address for birth on 20/12/1912 was 465 glasgow road clydebank( his daughter) , if i could find out who lived there then it might help. thanks golden girl

There's only John James Watt birth in Scotland between 1855 and 1895:
John James Alexander Shepard Watt (from IGI) Birth: 8th August 1869 Dyce, Aberdeenshire Mother: Margaret Watt
Does his death certificate in Ireland give any details on age, parents? There's a few others John James births in England (Westmorland, 1870) and Ireland (Tyrone, 1877) that may be him.
Hope this helps. hume24
Added: The 1869 John is boarding with his mother in Dyce in 1871. His mother, Margaret, is a domestic servant, 22, and born in Kintore, Aberdeenshire. In 1881, he's with his grandparents (William and Barbara) and in 1891, I can't find him.

Hi,
Grandparents were Margaret's mother and father, William Watt and Barbara Alexander. Although since your grandfather's age was c. 1890, I'm not entirely sure this is the correct family! There's a birth/christening for a John James Watt in Co. Durham, England for 1896, but it would only make John 16 at the time of his marriage.
All my guesses are using FamilySearch with the exact spelling feature on, but you may want to consider he was born just John Watt and added James to his full name later.

Hi Golden Girl, there is a Watt family living at 39 Levenhaugh St., Dumbartonshire in the 1901 Census that may be promising:
William, Head, 35, Bread Vanman, born Ireland Jane, Wife, 30, born Ireland John, Son, 9, born Dumbartonshire James, Son, 6, born Ireland William, Son, 4, born Dumbartonshire Elizabeth, Daur, 2months, born Dumbartonshire.
*James born Ireland - not an error - they must have went back for a time. Helen
