Looking for "Bayney" Co. Leitrim...
« on: Friday 01 February 08 01:36 UTC (UK) »

HI all  Smiley

Writing on the off chance that this place actually exists..

I have looked at the Parish Maps of Leitrim and the Townlands maps and even some atlas' and I cannot find "BAYNEY".... Huh

The name "bayney" was taken from a  Canadian church publication, death notice.  The deceased it said was born in Bayney, Co. Leitrim in 1818...that deceased being Mary Rutledge...who came to Canada in 1832.

My guess is that they spelled it in the notice perhaps how they thought it sounded but not likely anything close to what it is spelt like...anybody have any ideas??

If I was guessing I would think it was past Manorhamilton towards Co. Donegal...??

Thanks all

See www.seanruad.com to find townlands and parishes in Ireland (be sure to change default setting from exact match to search for part of a word).

P.S. maybe not in Co. Leitrim at all- sometimes if people lived on the boundary of two counties they would give the name of the closest town and this could cause confusion.

Hi Aghadowey

I actually have been to that sight...

I am thinking that perhaps in an old Irish accent perhaps whatever I am looking for sounded like "bayney' but was spelt much different...

I am not sure how letters are sounded out to make 'bayney'....

For instance if I said neighbour...well, if one did not know they could write 'naybore' or 'neyber'....

Anyway.... so goes it...
