I am looking for any information on the following properties which were owned by the Lambert family in Suffolk in the late 1880's. Botany Bay Farm of 33a 12p in the occupation of John Goode; Fox Farm of 45a 2r in the occupation of Daniel Jacobs; Briggs Farm of 105a 36p in the hands of the trustees of James Lambert. They also had 2 cottages of 1a 36 p in the occupation of Simon Miller and Henry Francis in Elmswell & Wetherden. Where should I look for any information.
Thanks, Heather

Hi Heather
I have moved your post to Suffolk for you. It is always best to get a moderator to do this for you rather than make a duplicate post on the correct board. Otherwise members can go over ground that has already been covered by others without realizing it.
The Suffolk Record Office would hold tithe maps, wills, old deeds and other relevant data for the farms.

A lot of Suffolk villages have local history recorders. One of the Suffolk regulars who is a recorder may be able to advise you on this.
I have checked the Suffolk 1873 Return of Owners of Land. This records all those who owned an acre or more of land at this date. It does not record property ownership.
Name of Owner, Address of Owner, Amount of Land (rounded to nearest acre) Gross Annual Estimated Rental (to nearest acre)
LAMBERT J, Stotfold, 117 acres, £142 LAMBERT James, Chattisham, 10 acres, £30 LAMBERT James, Leiston, 3 acres, £48 LAMBERT Mr. Market Weston, 4 acres £6 LAMBERT Thomas, London, 4 acres. £30 LAMBERT William, Little Wratting, 1 acre. £7

Hi Heather
Not a problem!
Were the farms also at Elmswell and Wethersden?

Yes I think they are. This information came from a sureity document used in Bedford by Alfred Lambert and his brother James Halls Lambert. The will of James Lambert in 1885 does say they may continue to work his Elmswell farm and not sell it if they desire to. His son Alfred moved back to Suffolk from Bedford around 1900 and moved to Ivy Tree Farm in Hadleigh. They were brickmakers.
This is the relevant piece from the sureity document: (a) 3 freehold farms, farm houses, homesteads and 2 cottages at Elmswell & Wetherden, Suffolk. Known as Botany Bay Farm of 33a 12p now or late in the occupation of John Goode; Fox Farm of 45a 2r now or late in the occupation of Daniel Jacobs and Briggs Farm of 105a 36p in the hands of the trustees of James Lambert deceased. The two cottages of 1a 36p are now or late in the occupation of Simon Miller and Henry Francis.
Thanks, Heather
