I wonder if someone is able to tell me if Greffuis is a genuine scandinavian surname or a phonetic attempt at some other name?
I have been trying to find the husband of Louie Zillah Prebble for sometime with no success. The name of her husband is from a usually reliable Family Book.
Googling for Greffuis brings up a small number of hits but I'm uncertain if these relate to a family name or relationship such as grandfather!
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
Pete

Not knowing which century your family bible pertains to, it's a bit difficult to translate. For instance, my "Flemme" ancestors name was spelt "Flamme" in their own country but the nearest phonetic sound to the 'a' in England was an "e", and the spelling changed to "Flemme". Travelling across England I know a "y" at the end of a word can be pronounced a couple of ways, either as an 'ee' - thus, for instance, baby could be pronounced babee or "babi" (the end syllable sounding like the 'i' in 'it').
Assuming the "e" in Greffius could have been a 'y' and thinking there might be a possibility that faint writing has distorted the "ff" from a "ph" I've come across 157,000 entries for the name GRYPHIUS.
I think you should possibly play around with the old fashioned double 's' (ss) which was written something like "fs" - you may find a surname Gressus for example.
Thanks for your suggestions which I will follow up.
Apologies for the delay in replying - seem to have missed your post somehow.
Thanks again

I would suggest trying to get the will of her father (he died in 1919, right?). Hopefully that would say something about her (and maybe her husband/children?) http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/cms/1226.htm
