Lowestoft's North Parade ANY surname 1881?
« on: Friday 01 February 08 20:40 UTC (UK) »

Hi Just curious to know who lived there in 1881
A function of the LDS 1881 Census online is that I can look at the neighbours, but I need a surname and an initial of anyone who lived there to begin with.

Cheers!

just to let you know you do not need a name

if you go to the search page for 1881 and just put in the search for england, Suffolk, you can select Lowestoft from a drop down box............
it will take some trolling through records but you can then access all Lowestoft census.

I tried an Advanced Query on the 1881 CD, but nothing comes up for North Parade in Lowestoft, so it may have had a different name in 1881, or not yet existed  Undecided

You can search by address on Ancestry's copy of the LDS 1881 Census index. Alas there appears to be no 'North Parade' in Lowestoft - only a 'Marine Parade' with 190 inhabitants.

Tried some of the names from 1892 but none of them were in North Parade in 1881.

the earliest mention of North Parade I can find is this

"The Belle Vue Park on Yarmouth Road was opened in 1874. A handsome iron bridge was erected in 1887  over the Ravine connecting the park with North Parade"

i also found this
The Ravine runs between North Parade (formerly part of Gunton Cliff) and Belle Vue Park.

so looked up Gunton Cliff on 1881 ......but not there

so then looked on multi map and tried roads around North parade
and have found whapload road (which is where the church of the vicar in the directory was)

Whapload Road is in the East Ward

Early pictures show just two big (4 floors) houses on North Parade called 'Park Mansions' and the architecture suggests it was built before 1881.

Thanks everybody Smiley

when you say there were only 2 houses , could they be 2 pairs of semis?

see this link

http://www.howards.co.uk/property-for-rent/property-details.php?pid=51828,

are the properties on the right the ones you mean?
because ont the 1881 i found 4 houses listed as
Bellevue Park

if you want to have a look try searching for
James F. REEVE   Head   M   Male   63   Lowestoft, Suffolk, England   Without Cure Of Souls And J.P.

3 Bellevue Park
Lowestoft, Suffolk
RG11/1903 F52 P1

2 houses are occupied and 2 unoccupied (which could mean they are newly built?)
and both occupied are houses with servants

Bingo!  You've got them.

The link shows half of one of two.  Servant quarters in basement.

Thank you!
