Hello,
Specifically for member RAA (Dave) who posted his look-up offer. I have a number of relatives with the surname Spencely or Spenceley (both variations are found) who passed through Stoke Damerel as members of the armed forces in the C19. If some, or if time is short just one, can be found, I'd be very grateful. I am assuming Stoke Damerel is now known as Devonport, but I don't know if one name = the other, or is larger than the other and therefore takes in more parishes. Certainly Stoke Damerel in freebmd corresponds to Devonport or sometimes Plymouth in the census returns. My query concerns 2 brothers, Richard and Robert, their marriages and some of their children who were born there:
Marriage March qtr 1869 Stoke Damerel RD Richard Spencely to possibly a woman called Mary Grace (surname unknown) - freebmd does not equate to the censuses.
Daughter of the above, Emily Alice Spencely, baptised Stoke Damerel or Devonport probably, no birth reg. on freebmd. Emily Alice Spencely, born c.1865-6 before parents' marriage. In the censuses she was known by the name Spencely and herself married (March qtr 1887 Hackney RD) with the surname Spenceley.
Marriage June qtr 1870 Stoke Damerel RD Robert Spencely to Mary Ann (Wills)
Children of the above: John Henry Spencely, b. reg. Dec. qtr 1870 Stoke Damerel RD
Mary Ann A. Spencely, b. reg. Sept. qtr 1872 Stoke Damerel RD
Emma Rosetta Spencely, b. reg. Sept. qtr 1876 Stoke Damerel RD
Also some Spencelys I cannot link to the censuses, but may be offspring of one of the brothers:
William Henry Spencely, b. reg. Dec. qtr 1863
Henry Ernest Spencely, b. reg. Dec. qtr 1867

Thanks Dave for trying. the one marriage you did find: 2 March 1863 William Spencely to Emma Jane Betty, does it say who the fathers were and who the witnesses were, as well as professions/trades?

No hurry for this. I didn't realise you had to pay, but I'm very happy to return the favour if you need anything from the LMA etc. Jotting the details down off the marriage cert is fine, I don't need the visual proof - but whatever is easier for you.

I see there was no corresponding Mary Grace...I did a cross reference and found this;

also in 1871 I see they have a younger daughter , Elizabeth A Spencely born Hants...
there is this possible birth reg for her ...which if you had the birth cert may confirm Mary Grace's maiden name;

I think this may confirm Mary Grace CLOAKE as the wife and mother ..

it seems that she was registered in mother's maiden name and not her married name. As you mentioned Richard and Mary Grace married a few years later
