Norman McLeod « on: Saturday 02 February 08 17:35 GMT (UK) »
My great Grandfather Norman McLeod came from Snizort Skye but we cannot find a birth/christening entry or death certificate. We know from family marriage records that he died circa 1881 1882 and may have been in Snizort when rest of family were in Renton (1881 census). He may have died at sea fishing or there could have been a family separation and the family just listed him as dead.

Hi Drew
It might help people trying to do some searches is you could include some additional info on Norman such as approx. year of birth/wife and children's names/birth years etc. I assume he was a fisherman from what you said. Which is the last census you have him in and where?
Regards.

Norman McLeod (Snizort) married Cathrine McKay (Duirinish) 11 June 1953 in Bonhill, he had eight children Malcolm, Margaret, Donald, Ann, Christina, Mary, Neil and Anna Bella. the children were born in Renton or Skye and we know they travelled between Skye and Renton from census records. He was employed as a printfield worker in Renton and a fisherman/labourer in Skye.
From the 1861 census of we find that he is living with his Aunt Margaret Buchannan. From her death certificate we find that she was the daughter of Malcolm McNeil and Margaret MacDonald. Therefore we can assume that this was Norman's grandparents and this are the Christian names given to two eldest children. In the 1841 Census a 15 year old Norman McLeod is living with two Margaret McNeils. In the 1861 census he is listed as being 36 years old, so he is likely to be born circa 1825/26 and place is given as Snizort.
In 1871 census Cathrine (listed as Head) and the family are in Snizort but no sign of Norman. Malcolm is listed as livig with his uncle John McKay in Lephen, Duirinish, previously he was with his maternal grandparents in 1861 census.
From marriage records he is shown alive in both the 1880 certificates for his son Malcolm and daughter Margaret marriages. On the certificate of his daughter in 1882 he is listed as deceased.
In the 1881 census his wife is listed in Renton as the Head. Their is also a Norman listed in the Snizort census with his son Donald, Norman's age is approx right but his son is 4 years younger that actual age so this may not be the right pair.
Have a great interest in Margaret BUCHANAN. She was the second wife of Donald BUCHANAN, a Chelsea Pensioner who was in the 78th Foot Regiment, 1815 to 1836. "Wife" but no marriage has been found. They had one daughter, Mary ca 1842, who maried Martin NICHOLSON in Dundee in 1873, both of Snizort.
We have been trying to find Margaret's death. She pops in and out of the censuses but the last time found was in 1891 when she was 86 and in Earlish, Snizort. Could you please share the information on the death certificate you have. It would be very useful.
Your private message received but I cannot see how to reply to it. My experience of one hour on RootsChat is not enough to work the system!
My interest comes from her husband's son by his first "marriage" (also not found), Alexander who was born in Edinburgh Castle ca1837 (birth not found!).
Thanks for the offer. Any advice will be welcomed.
