Archaic Medical Terms, many Languages
« on: Friday 07 January 05 14:44 GMT (UK) »

Just found this link on "What's new in Cyndi's List": http://www.cyndislist.com/whatsnew.htm
(which is also a useful link, itself !)

http://www.antiquusmorbus.com/ : A Glossary of Archaic Medical Terms, Diseases and Causes of Death

The site intro. says:

Welcome to Antiquus Morbus

The Genealogist's Resource for Interpreting Causes of Death.

Antiquus Morbus is a collection of old medical terms and their modern definitions.  The primary focus of this web site is to help decipher the Causes of Death found on Mortality Lists, Certificates of Death and Church Death Records from the 19th century and earlier. This web site will be updated often and as new information is received. My intention is to collect and record old medical terms in all European languages. The English and German lists are the most extensive to date.

There are not only definitions here, but also images of old certs. etc, so you can see examples of the handwriting.

Just looked at this one. It looks like a really useful website for understanding those death certificates.

I've got another to add for old medical terms usually found on death certificates  Smiley

http://www.pricklytree.webhostingpal.com/tools/index.html

There are a few sites out there already with this info... but I'm trying to make mine really comprehensive... and need peoples help to inform me if they have an old name with modern definition that isn't on my page.

 Grin

Trying to make it as simple and easy to read as possibly can, so it will be useful tool to others.

Hi Wally. thank's for the link. I've just received a death certificate from 1881, and found my ancestor died from TB. There's another term on the certificate but I don't have the definition. The term is ASTHENIA......... I think  Huh Good site, thanks  Smiley Lyn

Hi Lyn,

Aesthenia or asthenia means weakness or debility and I think the word is still used.
