Help needed to find my elusive Gt Grandmother please!
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 02:36 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,

I have spent several frustrating months trying to find out the background of my paternal Gt Grandmother!  We know her name was Mary Ann Austin as I have the birth certificate for my Grandmother Clara Gaunt, which lists her mother as 'formerly Austin'.

She was Mary Ann Austin b. 1862 in Kirkstall.  She is listed as Mary A on the 1901 census b. Kirkstall and on the 1891 census born in Bradford as Mary A. and under her married name Gaunt in both. She married John Gaunt in 1881, in Bradford in the Jun quarter.

There is a listing for a Mary Ann Gaunt in the 1881 census (she only married in 1881, so it would depend on when the census was conducted), but she is at the house of an Uncle named Hargreaves and John Gaunt is absent and at the house of his brother for that census.  Or there is a Mary A. Austin listed on the same census at the house of an uncle named Lunn.

I have no idea who her father was although, my parents had assumed he was named William, but on refelction say they have no real data to base that on.  Could someone please help me track her?  I have access to Ancestry, but can find no trace of her before her marriage.  I can't find a death listing either, but my Dad says she died in Bradford circa 1937.  Any help will be gratefully received!

kind regards
Jill

In the 1871 census there's an entry in Whitby for Mary Ann Austin age 9 with parents William and Hannah would this be them?

Class: RG10; Piece: 4847; Folio: 33; Page: 26

There's a birth index entry for a Mary Ann Austin in Whitby as well in 1861 JAS 9d/400

Just pushed this back to 1861 census

William and Hannah Austin, again in Whitby
Class: RG9; Piece: 3647; Folio 158; Page: 21

Finally there's a marriage in 1860 between William Austin and Hannah Richardson in Hunslet AMJ 9b/358

Jill,
Looking at the Yorkshire BMD's http://www.yorkshirebmd there is a birth for a Mary Ann Austin born in Kirkstall in 1861. But I can't find it on FreeBMD or the index at thegenealogist.. strange

 Hi Gmerrall,

Thanks for this, but this is not my Mary Ann Austin, I did think it was at one stage, but the Whitby connection didn't ring true and so I started to dig further.  I connected with an Ancestry member who had this William and Hannah Austin on their tree and we compared notes.  Their tree made far more sense and didn't include my Mary Ann.

Norma I think that your Mary Ann born in Kirkstall is probably closer to the mark!!

Thanks guys for all your help with this!

regards,

Have you acquired the marriage registration for Mary Ann and John??? It should name her father..........

Noticed these Austin's on the 1881 Census also born Kirkstall around the same time as Mary Ann........ may be a connection...............

Hi ,
I have a Mary Eddison b 1822 Bramley who married a William Gaunt b 1819 Horsforth. I have Mary's occupation as Innkeeper - The Crown.
coincidence ?
Sorry I had no reason to pursue the Gaunt line further.

Guys, I am so sorry!! I didn't get any notification of your efforts on this one and I have been off on a tangent with my "Wells" family brick wall which I have finally cracked.

I feel so rude and apologise profusely!!!!! Thanks so much for pursuing this for me, I am now back on the case!

Winston, you will have seen from my tree on Ancestry that I pretty much have garbage data from Mary Ann Austin back!  I started with her when I first started my tree and my attention to detail was pretty bad.  I realised many months later that I had picked up the Whitby family, because they were the only names that matched, but not much else added up. I found the person with that tree anyway and he had substantiated his claim for that Mary Ann!

I will look through in more detail at what you have all found out.  I apologise profusely for my neglect and rudeness in not getting back here before now!   Sad Embarrassed

PLease forgive me!

Jill

To answer KHartley,s question.  No I haven't ordered her birth certificate yet because there are too many Mary Ann Austin's, I'm not sure which one to order.

I am trying to look for some clues in the names she gave the children as I can usually trace my family line from the naming sequence of children.  Her eldest child was Edwin and I think that might be a clue!  Usually the eldest boy was named after his Grandfather, maternal or fraternal or someone special in the family and since John Gaunt's father was Walter and I can't find an Edwin anywhere in the Gaunt line, I have been looking for an Edwin Austin (grasping at straws I know).  I did find a family that might be worth exploring further, but will have to track them again and post the details separately!!That's if you're all still talking to me!!!

Cheers,
Jill
