OK I'll try not to make this convoluted!!

on 1871 census there is a Mary Ann Moule born abt 1860 aged 11 at the time.  Father is listed as Luke Moule, but no mother is listed. There is a George Austin b. 1805 listed as Father-in law along with a Lunn family and specifically a Sarah Lunn (nee Austin) who has a son Edwin born 1857.

Luke Moule married Hannah Austin in 1869, about 7-9 years after Mary Ann's birth.  There is a death listed for Hannah Moule mar quarter 1871.

In the 1881 census a Mary A Austin b abt 1862 pops up again with the Lunns minus Edwin who died in 1880, plus a granson Harry 1 month old.  Mary Ann married John Gaunt in April 1881, so Edwin, named after someone special for the 1st son.  Second son William, after his paternal Grand Uncle, who raised his Grandfather and 3rd son Harry after a dear baby cousin who she probably had a share in looking after from birth!!

So the thing is was Luke Moule Hannah's 2nd husband? George had a son William Austin who married a Hannah Richardson (I think)!  Or was Hannah George's daughter who had an illegitimate child who took on Luke name, Moule, when she married him?

My brain hurts, but my family's naming rites usually send me in the right direction eventually!

What does everyone think?  Does this sound feasible?

Cheers,
Jill

Dear All,

I now have the marriage certificate for my Gt Grandparents:

John Gaunt
Married 28 May 1881, Mary Ann Austin 20 yrs, spinster Worsted Spinner, Barkerend Road Bradford

I am not much wiser as to her parents even now.  The Father's name and Surname was left blank and no reference to her mother either

The only clue is that one of the witnesses to the marriage was a Mary Emma Lunn.  This is obviously the cousin that she was living with in the 1881 census, which probably confirms that she is the Mary Ann Moule age 11 listed on the 1871 census which Mary Emma is listed on as well. The second witness was Herbert Bradley (not sure if he's significant yet).

This probably means that the Mary Ann Austin that Twinmum found on the Yorkshire BMD born 1861 would be the correct mary ann austin. I can't access this link unfortunately.  Could anyone help me out with what is listed there please?  it is quite likely that her mother's name was Hannah! I can find no trace on the Ancestry BMD listings of a birth that fits at all!!!

Kind regards,
Jill

Is this the same family?? Would appear if it is that Hannah was not married in which case if no father on birth or marriage reggistration,Mary Ann's father may remain an unknown.....

And - you would have to purchase the actual birth registration to see what is on it - there is nothing more to show you from the site other than the refernce for buying it.....

Thanks so much for your reply on this.  For some reason I just can't get through on this link.

There is a mystery with this one!  Yes, that is the family, but that Hannah Austin is only one of 2 options.  George Austin also had a son, William Austin.  There is an entry for marriage between Hannah Richardson and a William Austin in 1860 (age discrepancy puts a questin mark on this being the one) and then a marriage listing for a Hannah Austin to Luke Moule in 1869.  Not sure which Hannah that this would be at just yet.

At the moment the single mother scenario looks the most likely. This Hannah would have been 32 when Mary Ann was born.  Interesting that she was a servant previously, I wonder.....!!

At least now I know, which Mary Ann's birth certificate  to order.  Thank you so much!!!!
kind regards,
Jill

Cheers,
Jill
