Middle name "Sahagoone""completed"
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 06:58 GMT (UK) »

I have an ancestor born in Wroughton in 1822 who has the middle name of "Sahagoone".  Cant find anything to give me a clue as where this came from.  I have found a family site with the name "Sahugun" in Mexico/USA but they dont seem to have travelled to the UK.  Anyone have any ideas please?

Well -  Winston Churchill's 24xgt Grandfather was supposedly a SAHAGUN   Cheesy
Pero Bernandes de SAHAGUN Way back in the 1100's or something  Grin - however, if you do Google "Winston Churchill" + Sahagun, there are lots of hits of pages where both appear

http://fabpedigree.com/s008/f184602.htm

SAHAGUN
Does appear to be Spanish, and originating in Spain first........the first Sahagun in Mexico was a Franciscian Friar in 1529:
http://www.mexconnect.com/mex_/history/jtuck/jtquetzalcoatl.html

......and "Sahagoone" a phonetic rendering of the name?

I wonder if Thomas' second name, "Prince" went together with the third forename  "Sahagoone" - so he was possibly named after someone known as "Prince Sahagun?" - was Thomas' father an army/military man. I wonder....?

Cheers

Well the family connection is that a Harris family member  married a Prince family member.  Although his parents did not.  I have Harris and Prince both from Wroughton Wilts.  I have grandparents James White Prince marrying Mary Ann Harris around 1820ish, which of course, I cant find either.  I was trying to find out what this Thomas's mother's maiden name was.  Does sound a bit weird for people that had not travelled out of the country at that stage but I wouldnt mind being related to Winnie.
Many thanks for your help.  sue. - Australia
Sorry - no military men.

Thomas Prince Sahagoone Harris was my 2x Great Grandmother's brother.

I have all my info on this family on my website http://www.family-forest.co.uk

There is a page for Thomas - http://www.family-forest.co.uk/familytree/groups/grpf0540.shtml (but this may move if I update the site.)

I would love to know your connection and if you have any more info on the family ...

Fiona,

I see on your web site that Thomas Prince Sahagoone Harris was the son of Mary, born Bath, c1795. Bath at that time would have been a sophisticated society with at least a sprinkling of Europeans.

I have known people in Canada of Spanish heritage whose name is Chagun, (pronounced sh-goon) and wonder if that might be the source of the name in your family.

Checking with Family Search and Google does not give much lateral help with this name.

Hi Fiona - I live in Australia

I believe that John Harris - Wroughton born abt 1756 married Ann Wallis
- married on 30th December, 1786

Children:
John Harris  abt 1787
Thomas Harris abt 1791
Mary Ann Harris abt 1793
Honor Harris abt      1798

My grandfather was John Prince Webb, his mother was Ann Prince, her parents were James White Prince and Mary Ann (Harris) Prince.  So Thomas Sahagoone would have been my Mary Ann's nephew.

Just read you 4th cousins, once removed.   Fantastic.

I believe Charlotte died and he remarried.  I got so much from your site.  So thank you.

Still trying to find the Ann Prince/Charlie Pickett marriage.  Why I think it is so is because I lost Ann Prince but she shows up, I think as Ann Pickett.  Two main clues.  She is the same age as Ann Pickett and she has her mother/a grandmother of mine with her.  Jane Prince.

Fiona, I can tell you that Thomas Harris was christened just plain old Thomas Harris.  His two middle names were given to him two weeks following his christening.

So "Prince Sahagoone" must have meant something to someone!   Sue

Sue, my sister contacted someone who went to  the Wiltshire Record Office and checked there. He reported back with this information, you may haveit alreday, but just in case....

> In the Registers:
>
> Baptized 14 Oct 1822,  Thomas son of Thomas and Mary Harris of
> Wroughton, father's occupation coachman Baptized 14 Oct 1822,  Henry
> son of Thomas and Mary Harris of Wroughton, father's occupation
> coachman

> Buried    19 Oct 1822,  Henry Harris of Wroughton an infant

> Received into the congregation 29 Dec 1822,  Thomas Prince Sahagoone
> son
of
> Thomas and Mary Harris of Wroughton, father's occupation coachman [NB
> the writing is consistent, no suggestion of "Prince Sahagoone" being
> added separately]
>
> In the Bishops Transcripts the same information with the addition of
> the word "twins" in the margin by the entries on 14 Oct 1822.

Also my sister has speculated on the following:

"I have Charles Pickett,  Wroughton marrying an Ann Humphreys with a son William b. 1733 Wroughton.  This Charles Pickett is the 2nd great grandfather of the wife of Thomas Prince S etc. Charlotte.

William married an Allethea and had at least 7 children including a Charles b.1758 Wroughton.  Could this be the one marrying an Ann Prince?"

Well, possibly.  My Ann was born abt 1806 - sorry the file is three flights down in the garage - ready for my trip to the LDS tomorrow.  I can find only one child - Charlotte.

I have a CD of baptisms for the area and on that it states that the "Prince Sahagoone" were added two weeks after the baptism.  Weird huh?

Could the name be due to a military connecton?  There was a battle at Sahagun in 1809.  If you do a search in the London Gazette for Sahagun you get some hits.

It's a long shot but y'never know?
