Foresters Gallye
« on: Sunday 03 February 08 14:59 GMT (UK) »

Does anyone have any idea what the foresters Gallye is? I have recently been sent a type out of some old letters of 1886 from a young soldier at Portsmouth hoping to get home for the Gallye and meet his friends there. He is trying to use that old ploy of a telegram to say his grandfather is on his deathbed and wants to see him, it didn't work as his mother didn't phrase the telegram as he had instructed. It seems a lot of Sussex lads joined the Royal Sussex Regiment about this time, would this have been a better bet than trying to get work locally? He refers to his father's and younger brother's problems in this respect.
