Workhouses - Bromyard 1934
« on: Friday 07 January 05 16:24 UTC (UK) »

From the Death Certificate, just received, it appears that my grandmother lived at Linton House, Linton Bromyard, whilst working at Lower Hope Cottage Ullingswick.  Linton House is the name of the Workhouse on the Worcester Road.  I suppose I am surprised that Workhouses were still on the scene during the 30's - has anyone got any background knowledge as to what they would have been like during this time.  I have since found out that people could be employed, but living in the Workhouse.  When did these places cease to exist.  Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi galante

This is a good resource for information on workhouses: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

Here is an entry for the Bromyard institution with history: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Bromyard/Bromyard.html

Hope that helps.
