Have found a Birth on BMD for a William George Plumb June qtr 1854 reg Wangford 4a 670. Wangford is in Suffolk not far from the coast at Southwold. You mentioned Ship Meadow so it sounds possible.
Only two probable 1871 Census William Plumb Servant aged 18 Ag Lab born Cambs? ?? with Thomas Hunt (Farmer) at Cowbit Bank, Spalding Lincs
and William Plumb 15 NEPHEW Ag lab Born Brinkley with Uncle William Plumb Head 64 Ag Lab born Brinkley Mary " 56 At The Street Brinkley, Cambs
Location not great but Brinkley is near Newmarket which is now Suffolk as is Bungay.
another Birth Sept qtr 1855 reg Newmarket 3b 475.
Also 1871 George Plumb 55 Widower Ag Lab b Gazeley Suffolk Zillah " 28 daughter At Long Yard Gazeley Suffolk

Hi Pam, Thank you so much for the information you have passed on to me. I think the William born in the Wangford area is the correct one as thats the sort of area most of the Plumbs originated from. I'll keep the two Williams from the 1871 census, on file, and see if I can match either of them. Thanks again. Regards, Joan

Just a thought
Shipmeadow, whilst being a small, scattered village with a population of around 250 in the mid 1800s, was also home to the Wangford Union Workhouse. At the same time there were about 135 inmates included in that number (there was room for 450 inmates).

Hi SM, I expect a lot of the Plumbs were living in the Workhouse at Shipmeadow as I think most of them were quite poor. Thank you for the information you sent about it, its always interesting to hear about the history of these places. Regards, Joan
