Look up Grant - William Elin c 1900
« on: Monday 04 February 08 17:44 GMT (UK) »

I am trying to trace the Grant family but have very little information. Andrew was born 21.8.1950 and his father  William Grant was born c 1923 in Strathdon, Aberdeenshire. His father also Willam Grant was born in Ein Invernessshire but I do not have the date so am guessing at 1900. Both William's were pipers in the 2nd Battalion Scot guards in the 1st and 2nd World wars. I would be very grateful for any inormaton received.

Hi Lynne

You haven't said whether you know the names of the two Williams' wives.  I was going to suggest that you started out by obtaining the birth cert. for William born c. 1923 in Strathdon to confirm parents' names. From this you would be able to view parents' marriage cert. on line at Scotlands People (assuming a Scottish marriage), in turn get bride and grooms' parents' details to then go and look for their parents' marriage...and so on.

Scotlands People (SP) have only just introduced extended birth indexes (and death indexes) on their site which let you search for births after the standard cut off date of 1907 for viewing these certificates on line (100 year privacy rule). You can now search for and view an index for births between 1908-2006. You can order these certificates directly through SP for £10.

Undecided Unfortunately, there is no birth showing for a William Grant in Strathdon Aberdeenshire. There are 21 entries (too many to order!) for William Grant births in all of Aberdeenshire between 1920-25, 4 in 1923 alone.

If you have the names for Andrew's mother, you will soon be able to search and order marriage certs. through SP (you can currently view cert images up to 1932). The new indexes will let you search the marriage indexes up to 2006. This would give you the info you need to move back to the previous generation. There are two births showing for Andrew Grants in 1950:

1   1950   GRANT   ANDREW   M   SPRINGBURN   GLASGOW/LANARK   644/05 0343
2   1950   GRANT   ANDREW NEIL   M   KIRKINTILLOCH   /DUNBARTON   498/00 0213

Hopefully, someone may recognise the names from their own research  Smiley In the meantime, someone may guide you to different resources.

I don't recognise the place name Elin  Tongue - do you know whereabouts in Inverness-shire it was/is?

Regards.

I have spoken to Andrew Grant again - he was born in Hammersmith, London on 21.8.1950. His mother was Marjorie Cam born c 1918 in Chichester but he has no idea where she and William (c 1923 Strathdon) were married. William's father, also William , was definately born before 1900 as he fought in the 1st world war in 1914 and was born in Elgin . This is Morayshire NOT Inverness as I wrote earlier.
Any other information would be very gratefully received.
Thanks,
Lynne Maclean
