Hello Dudleylad - and welcome to Rootschat  Grin

There are plenty of people on here ready and willing to help you, but we do need a hint or two to begin with - some names, and a couple of dates for starters ?

Ill start with the Marshalls

My Grandfather was Ernest Henry Marshall born October 1918, his father was also Ernest Henry Marshall born 1891 and he married an Ellen Willetts also born 1891

Ernests Father is the one who supposedly died in the Boer War

Hiya Dudleylad

Have found Ernest snr on FreeBMD registered June 1891 Kings Norton (which covers Smethwick) 6c 478

Cant find him in 1901 census though  Huh. If his father died in the Boer war it was the second one from 1899 - 1902

Will keep looking

He appears on the 1901 census as Ernest Jessop and his mother is Lucy Jessop, I cannot find a Lucy Marshall who is married in 1901 even though there is evidence of a sister born 1883 called Jane

Hiya Dudleylad

There are two possible marriages for Jessops

Arthur John Jessop to Lucy Lowe 1897 Kings Norton 6c 549
Thomas Harry Jessop to Lucy Jane Gee Kings Norton 6c 780

Wondering if her maiden name was put on the marriage certificate by mistake instead of her married name?

Do you have names for either of the fathers of Ernest snr or junior

Hiya Dudleylad

I noticed the following

On the 1901 census there is listed Arthut B Jessop 11 months. On FreeBMD there is registered a birth for Arthur Victor B Jessop 2/4 Birmingham 1900 (he dies 3/4 1906 Kings Norton)

1/4 Kings Norton 1897 there is a marriage for an Arthur John Jessop with a Lucy Lowe on the same page

Hiya Dudleylad

I think you might have to give in and order the certificate on this one. There were two Boer wars, one ran from 16 December 1880 - 23 March 1881 and the second from 9 October 1899 - 31 May 1902. He cant have died in the first one because Ernest was born 1891 and if he died in the second one Lucy was already married by those dates to someone else

There are 40 men listed with the surname Marshall on this site http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Databases/BoerDetailed/index.html

It could be that Lucy was never married to Ernests father and that would explain the marriage certificates. I have checked the 1901 census and it would have to be the marriage to Arthur John Jessop - Thomas Harry married Lucy Jane and they are together on the 1901. Jane Jessop might be her stepdaughter

I will keep looking

It seems as though Ernest was illegitimate and his mother was Lucy Marshall

Im confused on the Jessop link and may well have to make a few enquiries, im now beginning to think perhaps the Jessop died in the Boar War as Lucy is on the 1901 Census as a Jessop but theres no husband

Could she have just put the Jessop surname on the census as a mark of respect for a man she was living with and planned to marry?

Hiya Dudleylad

That could well be the case. The enumerator would put down which ever name he was told. There is a good chance that it was the marriage from 1897 and her husband was away from home when the census was taken

I could well be that Ernests natural father was the one who died in the Boar war
