WW2 war bride - Queensland to USA - Towzey/Reid or Reed
« on: Tuesday 05 February 08 05:15 GMT (UK) »

I would appreciate any ideas how to find out what happened to a Brisbane War Bride who went to the USA.

Hilda Maud TOWZEY b 1919 Brisbane, married Allan REID or REED in Brisbane in 1938. They could have had a son, John.

Either she divorced Reid/Reed, or he died (or she just ran off), she then married?  an American stationed in Brisbane during WW2.  The family story has her going to the USA as a war bride.

Her mother, Lillian Hilda TOWZEY nee Schmidt b 1898, Brisbane, is said to have gone to the USA after the death of her husband, James Roy TOWZEY, in 1954, to be with her daughter.

Thank you, Gazania

If you have Hilda's birthdate,  you can search on ssdi.rootsweb.com for her death.

Australia Recordsearch shows a Alan Reid, service number QX47584, b. and enlisted Brisbane, next of kin Hilda. You could try and get hold of his service records to see what information there is about Hilda there.

You could also try and see if there was an obituary for James Roy Towzey that might say where his daughter was living.

Jorose,

Thank you for your suggestions. They are all very worthwhile. I had searched the ssdi but I did not know you could use birthdate & christian name.  So something could open up there. I have been gathering some information on Alan Reid but there are quite a few of them in Brisbane but the service record looks promising.

It is years since I searched the newspapers for obits & funeral notices for this family. I may do it again.  Had a thought that I have not searched for funeral notices for Alan Reid.

I have put a request on this War Bride site but have yet to hear something:

Thank you again, Gazania
