Marden
« on: Tuesday 05 February 08 14:03 GMT (UK) »

I'm a relative newcomer to tracing my roots but discovered recently that one of my great grandmothers was a farmer's daughter who came from Marden.  She was married in the village church in 1858.  Before I drive there to have a look at the village is there a member of Rootschat who can tell me if New House, Marden is still standing?  Also are there any members of the Adams family still farming the land in the area?

Hi
I don't know Marden, but my ancestors are also from there - the Mattey's. William Mattey (1831) was the schoolmaster, so it is likely your ancestors bumped into him! I know the schoolhouse is still there, but sorry don't know about New House. Just thought I would say hello! (and if you find any Burtons, Bakers or Matteys we might be related).

Thank you for this and I'll look out for those names when I research that branch of my family further.

You might find this useful

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ukhfhs/miindex.html

It is the monumental Inscriptions for some of Herefordshire and there are some Adams on there.

How do you access these monumental inscriptions?  I'd be interested to know, when you have time to reply.

Click on the link, and then choose the letter you want! You then have to search for the name. It doesn't tell you everything that is on the grave, but it's useful for getting death dates and also sometimes finding groups of people who are related.

Thank you Claire.  It tells me when my great great grandparents died.

Thank you for getting in touch.  I know nothing about Marden, still less about New House, although I must have passed very near it quite often when going to Wales from Oxford where I live.  I knew there was a Hereford connection in the family, but it wasn't till recently, when I began researching my family history, that I discovered that a great grandmother came from Marden, was called Mary Adams and was the daughter of one John Adams.  He described himself in the 1851 census as 'guardian and farmer of 280 acres employing 9 labourers'.  I'm not sure that I'm brave enough to ring the Adams family who currently live nearby, but I might write to them.  Thank you for telling me about them anyway.  I shall certainly make a detour to Marden next time I go to Wales.
Kind regards,
Gisele.

This might interest you Gisele - go to old-maps.co.uk and follow the links to Marden. There you'll find New House Farm just to the east of the village. The maps are 1895 and 1905 and the farm looks like a very substantial property in those times.
Furthermore, on current O/S maps the name is the same.

Thank you for this.  I'll certainly look for New House on the OS maps.
