This is proving to be a tough one. I have been unsuccessful in finding him in 1851 or 1861. Or indeed any Hugh's of right age! But also no death for him.
I wondered if he was maybe illegitimate and registered in his mums name, but then used his dad's through out life if they married - butI can find any Rossiter marriage in that reg district.
Maybe his dad died and his mum remarried during his early childhood and he used a stepfathers name
HAte to say this - but think you will have to get birth cert to find parents.

Hi lizdb,
Thanks for that.
Seems strange he is not in the census when FreeBMD has him recorded.
I'll see if I can find any more data on him.
Best wishes

Hi Lizdb,
Found a death for an Anne Rossiter in the December Qtr of 1847 at Hartley Wintney.
Also found a birth record for a Charles Rossiter in the September Qtr of 1848.
They could be related.
Wondered possibly if Hugh was known by another Christian name.
Best wishes

Dont know if this is any help
1851 census Houghton Drayton HAmpshire
James Ray 37 Ag LAb MAry A Ray 31 wife Henry Rossiter nephew 8 scholar bn Houghton
It is indexed as age 3, but I am 100% certain looking at the image that it is an 8 (by comparing it to other 3's on the page and to the 8 at the bottom of the total column of males on the page)
now I have no local knowledge so cannot tell you if Houghton is in the registration district of Hartley Witney or not! but will try and find out.

Another one I dont know if it is any help!
1861
Upper Brook Street Winchester
William Whatmore (possibly Whalmore) 39 Jane wife 46 William H Rossiter stepson 18 bn Houghton (indexed as grandson, but definitely stepson on image) selection of Whatmore children also brother Charles Whatmore and brother Daniel Whatmore plus Daniels wife, Ann!
bit of a stretch of the imagination to think that Hugh was called Henry in 1851 and William H in 1861 I suppose!

Back to 1851 for them
Brockhurst Wm Whatmore 29 Maltster Jane 36 MAry A 1mth bn Brockhurst (this ties in with 1861 when eldest Whatmore child was Mary A age 10)
no sign of William H Rossiter though.
Could he be staying with Uncle and Aunty RAy, and recorded as Henry? (could well be known as Henry if that is what the H stands for, so as not to be confused with step dad also William)
AND does ANY of this have ANYTHING to do with HUGH or CHARLES, of whom I can find nothnig!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi both - I tried yeaterday and couldn't a Hugh either.
I looked at the Houghton ones, but Houghton is way west - between Winchester and Salisbury, whereas Hartley Wintney is near Basingstoke.
If there is a relationship there, maybe Hugh was born and registered in HW but mother/parents came Houghton?

That local knowlwdge is useful, thanks.
Still playing around with this one and have come up with two observations.
1) There is actually very little Rossiter activity in Hartley Wintney reg distr, which does imply that the family were not really settled there. I put Ross*ter and HArltley Wintnley into Free Births, marriages and deaths and came up with onyl the following entries:
births - Agness Rosseter Jan/Fen/mar 1851 Charles J/A/S 1848 Hugh O/N/D 1844 Edward Tilden J/a/S 1904
marriages - Jul/Aug/Sep 1915 Merton E H Rossiter to Finch
deaths - Ann O/N/D 1847 William J/F/M 1900 (bn 1871ish)
Not a lot. Plenty around Hampshire though.
2) There is a death of a Hugh Rosseter in Jul/Aug/Sep 1848 in Stockbridge, HAmpshire. Again I dont know where this is, but it could be the elusive Hugh dying before the 1851 census.

So, keeping in the H W area - here is the Agness in 1851
Meath (or Heath) Common Crondale
Charles Rositer (indexed Roriter) 28 Ag Lab bn Frome Somerset Louisa wife 27 bnWinchford Thomas ? son Henry 3 son Agness 3 months dtr all children bn Crondale
my conclusion is that the coverage of HW is not very good on FreeBMD!!!

Hi lizdb / Mum44,
Many thanks for the posts.
The story so far....
Henry Rossiter born circa 1843 in Houghton is William Henry Rossiter, the son of William Rossiter & Jane Faithful both born circa 1816. They married in St Thomas, Winchester on May 13th 1841.
Between 1943 & 1851 father William disappears and in 1851 Jane marries William Whatmore, by whom she has a daughter, Mary A Rossiter born circa 1851 in Brockhurst.
Charles Rossiter & Louisa ( maiden name White) have the three children listed ( Thomas ,Henry, Agness) but for some reason I have them in my database as being born or baptised in Crookham Cum Ewshott. Charles & Louisa married in Hartley Wintney in 1846,which matches well with the birth dates of the children.
It's possible that Hugh and Charles could be the brothers or cousins of William Henry as the dates fit pretty well. It would also match with the death of Hugh in 1848.
What intrigues me at the moment is the Ray connection. It looks like the sister of James Ray(Rae/Wray?) married into the Rossiter family. Wonder if William Henry's father ( another William) had a brother?
Hope this helps.
Best wishes

PS. There are/were a lot of Rossiters from Eling, Fordingbridge & East Coker so it's possible that one of their descendants could have moved over to the Hartley Wintney area to set up home.
