Am trying to find ancestors of John Cowan.Born c 1854 d 1882, married to Sarah Richardson
Death certifcate states mother Janet Mc Donald as mother. 1861 census, he possibly with a Janet Broadfoot as mother.
Would like to know exactly who his mother was, and where she was born and died etc.So I can trace ancestors.

Not sure if this will help as it doesn't match necessarily with what you have. John Cowan and Sarah Jane in 1881:
John Cowan 28, agr. b. Stranraer, Wigtownshire Sarah Jane Cowan 28, b. Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire Annie Cowan 4, b. Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire John Cowan 2, Kirkcolm, Wigtownshire George Cowan 11 Mo, b. Leswalt, Wigtownshire Margaret Richardson 6, step daughter, b. Leswalt, Wigtownshire
Address: Auchentibbert Cot House, Stoneykirk
There is this christening entry for a John Cowan which might fit, but not with the maiden name you have for his mother from his death cert. Have you looked at his marriage cert?
JOHN COWAN Christening: 03 NOV 1853 Stranraer, Wigtown, Scotland Parents: ANDREW COWAN and JANET MARSHALL
Regards.

Hi Kama
On John's marriage cert. his birth shows as illegitimate with only mother's name showing - JANET ADAMS. Close but not close enough - wrong - with the previous family (Andrew and Janet).
I've just looked at the 1851 census in Wigtownshire for a Jean/Jane/Janet (all variants) Adams showing on the index. There are only two entries showing:
Sarah McCormick 78, head, housekeeper, b. Stranraer Agnes Broadshaw 19, odger, dress maker,b. Mochrum, Wigtown Jean Adams 15, lodger, dress maker, b. Stoneykirk
Address: High Street, Stranraer
And also another Jane Adams, 28, born in England. She shows as an actress and is lodging in Whithorn.
A hard one this one Kama
Regards.

Thanks to you both, Had already ruled out the Andrew Cowan and Janet Marshall,as their son not illegitimate.
Will look into the Janet Adams connection, worth a try, but it is a puzzzle!
