1861/1871 census Coventry Warwickshire
« on: Friday 23 July 04 16:40 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

Could I please have a lookup on 1871 census for Coventry? and/or 1861 if possible?

Looking for John PICKERING of Coventry, c1790-1878. I already have 1841 & 1851 census, but his origin is still obscure despite all the info I have. I'm hoping 1871 census may give a recognisable birthplace.

Born 1787-92 (sources vary). Birthplace given as Oakley (Warks) in 1851 census, which seems obscure - may be some connection with Oakley Wood area near Warwick.

1826 marriage to Sarah EDKINS at St Mary Warwick gives Budbrooke as his parish. Budbrooke covered in IGI but his baptism not there.

He was widowed in 1848 and did not remarry.

Occupation - a tavern keeper (Kings Arms) in Mill Lane Coventry at least 1828-1841. However 1851 census says Ag Lab, and living in Harnall Lane Coventry.

No further info until he entered Bablake Hospital (men's hospice) around 1873.

In 1871 probably staying with one of his children, either
Henry & Sarah BURDEN in Coventry; or
Thomas & Elizabeth PICKERING in Coventry (Chauntry Place in 1881); or perhaps
William & Louisa PICKERING in Stoke (Shakespeare St in 1881)

Regards

Thanks Sue,

Very helpful, that's the right family. This is first the source I've seen that says John was born Coventry, and I think I may have tracked down his baptism now.

Cheers

Belen,

Thanks very much, this does look right for 1861. Benjamin is an exact match for John's youngest son born Q1 1839, and Freehold Street matches 1871.

Now I have a full set of census for John 1841-51-61-71. They all appear correct from children's names etc., though his age varies a little (to be expected).

What I did not expect is three different birth places:
1841 - Warwickshire
1851 - Oakley WAR (Huh - perhaps Oakley Wood near Warwick?)
1861 - Billesley WAR
1871 - Coventry WAR
And at his marriage in Warwick in 1826 he's "of Budbrooke"! These places are not even close... but at least they're all Warks.

Looks like I have some more work to do yet, to find his real origins.

Cheers
