My Cheshire Brickwall
« on: Wednesday 06 February 08 23:39 GMT (UK) »

On '51 Census... my 2 x gr. grandmother Jane HORTON (ORTON?) was said to be born in Newton, CHS.

However, on '61, '71, '81, '91 and '01 Census she was said to born in Sutton, CHS.

'41 Census - not found

Jane was born c1828 + - 5 years.

Her Marriage certificates states that her father was Thomas HORTON - a Horse Breaker.

There appear to be numerous villages named Newton and Sutton in Cheshire... can anyone help me locate Jane's baptism please... and / or Thomas HORTON's Marriage.

Thank you

Sara McGinlay

Hi Sarah,

genuki has this information which may help:
SUTTON (near Middlewich)  A township in Middlewich Parish, Northwich Hundred, which in 1892 was added to the civil parish of Newton (near Middlewich).

NEWTON (near Middlewich)  A township in Middlewich Parish, Northwich Hundred. Extended in 1892 to include the whole of Sutton (near Middlewich). In 1894 most of Newton was added to Middlewich civil parish, and the remainder was transferred to Kinderton.   Including the hamlets of Newton Bank and Newton Heath, and most of the town of Middlewich.

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for your interest. Yes, I'd seen the Genuki info, re: the villages of Newton & Sutton.

Jane married in 1850, Leeds WRY, and appears on '51 and later Census there... but always maintains that she was born Cheshire.

There are various Jane's on '41 in both CHS and WRY so she's difficult to pinpoint - another possible candidate is "Jones Horton" aged 9 (HO107 97 12) living Newton nr Frodsham... Sutton Weaver and Sutton Hall, are in close proximity.

Well, I did say it was "my brickwall" (LOL)

Thanks to all of you... for the Marriages.

See that there are a couple of Thomas HORTON's who are "Farmers" on the '41 and '51.

Now if only I could find one with that elusive word "Horsebreaker"

I don't suppose either of the Marriages mentioned Thomas's occupation by any chance?

I'm really grateful for your ideas.... thanks !

Hi Sara,

In 1841 there is a Jane Horton in Leeds town aged 15, not born in county, who is a hawker - as she married in Leeds perhaps this could be her?

Hi,

Thanks !

It's a lovely brickwall, isn't it...

I would love to get to the bottom of her (and her father)

Just can't be sure of her at all...
